Why does Disney hate moms?
Why must moms always be killed off (either during the movie or before the story begins) in Disney movies?
Snow White
Cinderella
Bambi
Beauty & the Beast
Little Mermaid
Sleeping Beauty
The Sword in the Stone
The Jungle Book
Aladdin
The Goofy Movie
Pocahontas
Dumbo
and more....
What is up with that?
Finding Nemo
Brad...all you said that it doesn't help the plot of the movie in all but a few of the Disney movies. So why kill them all off if it doesn't hurt the plot to have mommy alive?

Motherly figures are a source of comfort-the typical Disney movie follows the hero's journey, which incorporates a struggle. No mother, no comfort, thus a struggle that the character has to get past. It makes the story more...heroic.
Or maybe Walt had a bad mother.
Both are possible answers. haha

Well aside from adding to the plot and development to the story, let's go over the list.
Snow White - Well W.Disney said she was 14, so this is a good question.
Cinderella - An old fable that originated in Russia. Disney adapted it, but it's definately not their story.
Bambi - Added to plot development.
Beauty & the Beast - Wouldn't have added anything to the story, Belle is an adult.
Little Mermaid - Again, wouldn't have added anything.
Sleeping Beauty - Wouldn't have added anything to the story.
The Sword in the Stone - Never saw that one actually.
The Jungle Book - A boy lives in the jungle, if he had parents it would ruin the whole movie!
Aladdin - Wouldn't have added anything to the story, he's an adult.
The Goofy Movie - Adds some tension as to why Max and Goofey are so close.
Pocahontas - Wouldn't have added anything to the story.
Dumbo - Added to the plot development.
So aside from Snow White, I think that each was justified.

So the main character has to face all the perils of the world on his/her own. It is a bummer though. The only "mother" figures in Disney movies are evil stepmothers ("Snow White" & "Cinderella") with the one exception of Sleeping Beauty's mom, who isn't dead but is a definite non-entity in the plot.

As someone else already stated, a good number of Disney films are based on popular fairy tales. So, blame the authors of those fairy tales (specifically "Cinderella", "Beauty and THe Beast", "Sleeping Beauty", etc.) for the lack of a mother.
The same poster made another good point: not having the mother adds vulnerability to the character. "Mother is god in the eyes of a child".

Don't blame Disney, blame the story writers. Most Disney movies are just adaptations of stories and/or fairy tales written by someone else.
As to why mom had to die, it adds to the vulnerability of the main character. Mom is universally accepted as a protector of her children.

I always thought it was strange too,I guess that it was just the writers idea to make the story of the main characters having to matyre and grow from a bad experience.:)

I have heard that Walt had some mother and/or stepmother issues growing up and maybe the recent ones were a continuation of that.

1) It's more tragic
2) It makes the main character more of an underdog
3) Mommy doesn't buy into the corporation "enough"

a lot of the movies show how bad some people's lives are and how they turn them around. the fact that they have no mother makes them seem more destitute.
