Opinion of long range rifle cartridges.?

It's a great round if you don't mind recoil, and although it's not that bad, I would suggest that you fire a few rounds from one before you build yours. It's ideal for what you have in mind and is the sniper round used by the British Army special forces. What better recommendation ?

The .338 Lupua is an excellent long range cartridge, it is head and shoulders above the .300 Win Mag. I have heard of the Lupua making some darn nice shots out to 1500 yards. And please don't listen to joe t, he doesn't know anything about the Lapua, so he is just throwing useless info out there.

Google this and or browse the shooting mags at B&N or Borders. What do you plan to hunt? This would be a great elk or Grizzly Bear round but to much for deer or Black Bear. A 30-06 is adequate for elk, Black Bear Mule Deer or White Tails. Jack O Conner used to hunt Kodiak Grizzly with an 06 but you'd better be a damn good shot and within 200 yards.

if you are wanting to hunt with this rifle ,you would be way over gunned for any thing in North America.the 338 lapau is a specialty round that bridges the 300 win mag and the 50 bmg,in the sniper community.dont know if it was developed for such but that is where it found its home.the cost of ammo would be at least five dollars a round if you loaded them your self .the only place that im aware of that commercially loads this round is black hills ammo.and they only sell in lots of at least five hundred.it is a very fine round for what its used for ,but in all reality there is no place for it in the hunting Fields .if you want a 338 that has more smoke than the regular 338 mag.get a 338 ultra mag.wont have to mortgage the house to buy ammo atleast.and if you absolutely have to have a lapau armlite makes one for about 1200 dollars that will shoot sub moa.

I believe you meant the 338 Lapau, not the 388.* Great caliber, but expensive to shoot, great accurate long range caliber.* Very usable on man or animal.*

It is a big SOB and Loud holly cow it hurts to stand near the darn thing esp if it has a break.
