Why is it that people only care about the less fortunate only ...?

at Christmas time? What happens to them after Christmas? Do they stop existing ?

Update:

I also mean the elderly , and I know that we pay taxes in order that the Government can provide them with the necessities of life ,but people are also in need of a visit a phone call , and that doesn;t apply to Christmas only!

Update 2:

Well a few days have passed since I asked the question and by what I read I can tell that the caring still exist amoung us!

The spirit of giving is in us especially at Christmas ,because we all have something to give even if it's little , I don't mean material things either , a phone call to a loved one a visit to someone who is alone or sick, this is the Christmas spirit ! This is a time of the year where we go the extra mile to do something for someone else ,and if it is because of guilt so be it ! I only wanted to see if my question would move the conscience, and it did!

Merry Christmas

I believe they care about them all year long but care a little extra at Christmas.

Come now. Do you really not understand this phenomenon? People care and make incredible sacrifices for the needy [less fortunate is a politically correct and insulting term IMO] every day of the year. This time of year, the marketing juggernaut that has become synonymous with Christmas chooses to bring attention to the needy.

Always remember, the best things [and worst things for that matter] that happen in life generally go unnoticed because the media can't find an angle that will make it interesting enough to exploit.

I dont stop caring or loving those that the world seems to forget the other 362 days of the year ( the other 3 are Thankgiving Day and Christmas or in some cases their birthday, So for those that do in only those day, if is out of guilt or pity) As I know there is life outside of those holidays I myself have felt that sting of being hungry, alone, and in major need of something other than food, yet not being able to fill it. I know that Jesus is with me EVERY day I breath and live, So why wouldnt he be there for others in all walks of lives. because I know His love and what His words mean. My heart flows with the hope of making a difference in at least one person's life . Whether through just one day with me or a liftetime of knowing me. As life is precious and a miracle and people need to see it that way. There is no life that is worthless. AS every single one holds value to me and to God, because He created them and cares enough to guide others to where they need to be.

What those that have it good refuse or dont want to see . Is that that could be them in need. Very easily. Through the loss of a job, the loss of their home through fire or storms or foreclosure, or the pains of a death of someone so dear, can change how we live and see life. It is by the grace of God they are where they are today. Yet those people that have it good forget there is a world outside their own walls. That will never know the joy or love they so desperately need.

DON'T take my words wrong , there are quite a few with money and resources to help out and really do. However they are few and far between , there are more hurting and in deep needs though , than those that have a lot , and are willing to share something.

    It can be overwhelming actually.

Americas poor and "less fortunate" are in far better shape and have more free care available to them then in any other country. Most people, in reflection of their own good health and wealth, are aware of those not so well off when the Holiday season comes so that is why we try to do more for the poor. After Christmas the poor are still taken for. They are fed, housed, clothed, and educated courtesy of the taxpayer.

I wonder that too. My kids' school has announced that we're to bring something different into school for a different charity every day: canned goods one day, old clothes the next, story books and children's pajamas (I kid you not) another day, toiletries the fourth day and then unwrapped children's toys the last day. This is in addition to organizing the class holiday parties and Secret Santas for the kids. I'm all for charity and I don't mean to sound like a Grinch but couldn't we have done this during a less busy time or, even better, spread it out over time?
