Christians - Why did God tell Abraham to kill his son?

Its really a story that is a metaphor for the messiah.

But if you are to take the bible literally, then you have to admit, that God is a bit of a jerk.

Its like the president, telling you, that you have to put your kids up for adoption to prove your love for country. Then after filling out the paper work, telling you it was only a test.

God had several reasons to ask this of Abraham. God can give us many life lessons from a few words, that we can use for different situations.
