ɹɐǝɟsuɐs Blessed Cheese Maker
I am a former born again Christian who is now an Atheist father of 4 boys who are the greatest. I am worried because Religion has a history of causing great harm to the human race, and our continued reliance on religion, based sole on faith, will cause us to keep hurting one another. As a father I am concerned that my kids will one day be harmed by religion, and believe I have a duty to try and help others get out of the dangerous cycle that religious belief creates. Right this second, someone is being killed or tortured in the name of God, it is time that humanity gets honest about the results of faith based religion.

3 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat can we do to stop religious violence?
I know you religious lot, don't think its religion's fault, which is silly, but for everyone else.
What do you feel is the most effective way of stopping continual religious violence?

6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoSo I hear from religious people that the war in Israel is not a religious war...?
I asked earlier how anyone could see religious as anything but harmful given the results in Israel, and recieved a bunch of answers claiming it isn't religion's fault, that it was political or about territory or, my personal favorite, that kids fight in the playground so thats what adults do, too....
But, honestly, you don't think the Israel situation isn't motivated and maintained by religious expectations of worshiping the 'right' God?
Isn't the reason the 'promised land' is called that is precisely because someone believed they were destined to own it as a promise from God? Aren't Palastinians defending it, assured that they will achieve paradise if they die as martyrs for thier God?
What else would possibly motivate humans to fight over a rock strewn mount in the desert?
Reliance on faith is harmful, because there is no way to prove faithed motivated expectation, so there is no way to defend against it, because reason is ignored to maintain it.
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow can anybody watching the Israel/Hamas fighting see religion as anything other than harmful?
It is so abundantly clear to me that reliance on faith and invisible deities leads to horrible behavior. Why is that so difficult to see for so many other people?
28 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWho determined that Torture was a just punishment for sin?
If God created all law, then was eternal torture his choice? If so, isn't that incredibly immoral?

28 AnswersMythology & Folklore1 decade agoShould God be absolved of the death of the Girl, whos parents relied on him faithfully for healing?
I am reading a bunch of questions about the irresponsibility of the faithful parents, and their actions of faith instead of taking her to the doctor.
But does God bear responsibility, given his claims in the bible about faith and protection?
I believe that if God exists, he has some splainin' to do, I think people are ignoring the incredible amount of honest faith it takes to watch your daughter die, while you pray for God to heal her. If anyone could move a mountain, its parents like these. Yet God chose not to bless their faith as promised in the word.
Does God deserve to be questioned over this situation?

20 AnswersEtiquette1 decade agoWill impending death cause you to live better or give up and die?
I just finished watching a video called the last Lecture by Dr. Randy Pausch given in September 2007. I am always the last to catch onto these things, but it was so inspiring I thought I would share with my friends here on R&S. It is 10 minutes, so star it and watch it when you have time.
Question: How would your religion or lack of it cause you to behave with your final 6 months of life?
Have a wonderful night all...

11 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs it moral to expect the worst out of humanity and the future of mankind?
One of the reasons, I rejected Christianity is because it caused be to adopt a belief that the world was degrading morally and would require destruction at the hands of God. Accept of course for other 'good' people like myself.
That was a negative and destructive view of life, and didn't even reflect the reality of a socially and morally progressing world.
So is religion REALLY good for mankind, if it promotes the expectation of the worst in all others that don't share religious belief, and causes people to justify the extinction of those 'others'?
20 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf the OT is a reflection of pre civilized man's view of God, should we get rid of it?
Whenever Atheists bring up Old Testament stories about God's behavior and rules, the response is that the OT is only for ancient Jews and that the Laws and stories in it no longer apply.
If that is really the case, why even include it in the bible, other than to confuse non believers into thinking God was cruel at one point in time?
21 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDoes the song, Dear God, by XTC accurately represent the belief of Atheists?
I used to think it did, when I was an agnostic and while I was a believer.
Now that I am an Atheist I don't see it that way at all, for me, it is simply a lack of evidence and the existence of tragedy doesn't even come into play.
Do other Atheists feel like the existence of disease and tragedy disprove God?
And do Believers and agnostics feel like Atheists all feel this way?
Here is the song, if you haven't heard it:
