Where did you learn about evolution?
After reading many of the question about evolution posed by religious cult members, I am curious as to where you learned about evolution. Clearly most of you have never taken a college level course on evolution/biology, nor have you read any of the current texts on the subject. Dawkins' "The Ancestor's Tale" and Gould's "The Structure of Evolutionary Theory" are two excellent sources of information. So, where did you learn what little you know about evolution, especially the common myths, like man descended from apes, or that evolution has something to do with abiogenesis?

I have tried to get my information from unbiased sources. I learned in school, but found that what I retained of the basics of 10th grade bio wasn't sufficient to argue here, so I went and learned more. I feel like I understand the subject much better now and can hold my own in an argument.
No church I was ever associated with denied evolution, but the religiously-affiliated college I went to had its share of creationists. I didn't bother arguing back then because it seemed like harmless hoot-nanny. It doesn't seem as harmless anymore.

<sigh>
I learned about the GTE in several courses:
General Biology
Microbiology
Molecular and Cell Biology
Genetics
Immunology
Anatomy and Physiology
there's more - but you get the drift.
I've read Gould, Dawkins, Miller, Dowd, Futuyma - etc.
I share your frustration with the "if man evolved from monkeys" type questions - but I'm equally as frustrated by the evolutionary Bio-101 students (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) with thier ipse dixit and gross misrepresentation/misunderstanding of the alternative positions.
BS wrapped in academic language is still BS.

I am a Bible-belt Christian, and I was taught evolution in high school and college biology classes, where else? I've also read some Gould, and Darwin. Religious does not always equal creationist.

Evolution is not the same as abiogenesis, indeed. It is too bad Dawkins glosses over it efforts to make his argument for atheism appear strong and lump everything imaginable into Darwinian mechanisms. This point is lost on Dawkinsians.

Middle school and high school. In recent history, from "National Geographic" and a few articles from "Newsweek".
The posters who have said that you can believe in a higher power and evolution are correct. Pope John Paul II made statements about how a person can believe in god and evolution since evolution explains the "how" while religion explains the "why".

i think technological know-how desires to evaluate in school and save much less of the bible out of the college. Its getting ridiculous how some places are taking a number of our technological know-how out of the educational because of the fact its not biblical. Evolution is a extensive element of our universe and could study.

Gee Funny you should mention those
Gould has several other books that are also good reads
Dawkins gets on my nerves because he is pompous
Oh and biology class on evolution was both required and enjoyable to take.
I still believe in God

There are many fantastic resources:
Dr.Dino's many websites
Any website with "prayer" in the title
AIG, of course
Any website with "Bible" in the title
All books about evolution which refer to a Creator in the title
Etc.......
Source(s): Oh, and don't forget the R&S section of Y!A. It's nice to be able to cut and paste from here. - Anonymous1 decade ago
I've wondered this as well.
I learned from books and the Internet. They didn't teach evolution is high school when I was there.

My experience is that almost all of them get their information from creationists books or websites ONLY.
Do you really think any one of them is going to attempt Gould's 2000 page book? Even I had a hard time with that one and I'm a biologist.
