What is the immigration issue really about?

1. Securing our borders

2. Protecting American jobs

3. Racism and Xenophobia

Update:

Thank you everyone for confirming what I thought... that politicians are using fear to mislead us.

If this issue was about security, politicians would be talking about the even larger unprotected border to our North. Then again, Canadians are white, so they don't. Or they would be talking about our unprotected ports which is an even more important problem that needs to be solved.

And any economist would tell you we desperately need a guest worker problem and "just throwing them out" would send us into recession. A guest worker program is one of the few sensible solutions offered, but it has lost out to fear-mongering.

I'm not saying that border security isn't a real issue. And illegal immigration is unfair to those who want to come here legally.

But the issue, as currently defined by the politicians running for office, is clearly a "Willie Horton" issue. They are using race and hatred to get votes and it is despicable.

Right now, globalism is creating some kind of transition in the US economy. Overall, a global free market is good for the US economy, but it means change for quite a few people, and not necessarily change for the good.

Historically, any time the average American feels uncertain about their own economic aspects, anti-immigration sentiments rise.

That would be 1 and 2.

It is about some pols needing an issue to get people riled up getting votes. The one thing I am almost sure of, four years from now there will be more illegals, or undocumented, call them what you want, in the USA , than there are today.

I agree with the first answer.

Especially when we get into offering illegal aliens, health benefits, SS benefits, etc. There's a system. Go by it, become a citizen, then enjoy.

Edit: except the "killing Americans" part. We've got plenty of Americans, immigrants, and everyone else killing Americans. I don't think it needs to be pointed out specifically about illegal aliens.

1 + 2, and Protecting Americans in general

1 and 2. You left out the fact that they kill Americans. Also, it will cost taxpayers $2.5 Trillion if they are not deported.

Each year, around 10,000 Americans are killed by undocumented workers. That is a fact that our liberal media refuses to let people know.

Also, over 25% of all federal prisoners are foreigners according to prison statistics gathered by the federal government. Well over 10% of the prison population consists of adult children of undocumented workers.

I don't think there is an immigration issue. There is a problem illegal aliens being here. Illegal aliens are not defined as immigrants under U.S. law.

It is about the majority of Americans wanting the immigration laws enforced and the political leaders in this country not wanting to.

I do not care if it is racism. If they broke the law then they are illegals and should be prosecuted. Better yet, lets send all our poor and homeless to sunny Mexico. Let's see how they deal with a slew of gringo's leeching of their systems.
