We just moved to New England this summer (Portsmouth, RI) and am renting a house that has oil heating. How do I check the oil level?

There is a clear gauge on the top of the big black tank in your basement or the garage. It will show measurement in fourths. Call the oil company if you need more info. My oil company told me depending on how long the tank is you could tell how many gallons it is etc. Very informative.

First you need to find the tank. Once you find the tank, see if there is an indicator on the side of the tank or on top of the tank the tells you the amount of fuel left inside (like a gas gage on a car) If you can find neither of these then I would open the lid and stick a board or some kind of rod down inside until you hit the bottom. pull the stick or rod back up and see where the oil left a mark, and you can approximate how much you have left.

There should be a gage on your storage tank. If this is your first winter, I'd call the company that delivers oil and see if they can tell you how much the last tenants used. You don't want to run out in the middle of a cold spell because they may be a full day getting more to you

An above ground tank should have a clear tube on one end that shows the level. If it is an old inground tank, you may have to use a graduated stick through one of the tubes on top of it. Or it may have a gauge which you are just not recognizing.

If the level is all you want, try sliding your hand down the tank. If you feel a temperature change, that is the liquid level. If the tank is indoors, you could take a hair dryer and run heat up and down the side of the tank. Wait a few seconds then feel for the temperature change.

My tanks have an orange gauge on the top of them. It measures inches of oil in the tank.

Find the fuel tank and slide a 1x1 piece of lumber down in the tank. When you pull it out it will show you how many inches in the tank. If you know how the size of the tank you can figure out how much is in there.
