Would this bother you?

I've had my engagement ring since April. At the end of May I stopped by to get it clean and they said my side stones were loose and had to send it away to get fixed for 10 days. Stopped back in today, and she said one of the prongs on the big stone is loose. If I come back when the manager is there, he can try to fix it, but she didn't want to because of the size and setting of the ring. If he can't fix it, he'll have to send it away for another 10 days.

So I'm pissed because I've had the ring for like 9 months and this is the second time it's had to be repaired! You pay that much money, you think they could get it right. And my fiance thinks I'm over-reacting.

Would you be upset, fellow brides-to-be?

Update:

We have a warranty, so the repairs don't cost me anything. It's the bother of it, and not having my ring for days at a time. I don't even like to leave my house without it.

Update 2:

No, I have an office job, and while I'm at home I usually don't have the ring on. Especially not for shower, dishes, etc.

I'd be somewhat upset, but let me ask you this:

Are you doing heavy labor with your hands while wearing the ring? Even not-so-heavy labor can damage it.

I don't know if you're a stereotypical bride-to-be who "won't ever take the ring off!" but after it comes out of repair this time, do take it off when you're going in the shower, doing dishes, gardening, heavy cleaning, etc. It's unusual for a ring to get that banged up unless the finger it's sitting on is doing a lot of work.

Edit to add: Thanks for the additional info you added. If you can 100% rule out that you're not exposing the ring to excessive wear and tear, then it does seem to be defective and you'll need to address this with the jeweler. Cite things like lemon laws on cars and ask them what applies to a ring that's in the shop almost as much as it's on your finger.

Slightly but to be honest it's probably the fiancee's fault in the first place. I would be happy on the other hand that I finally got a jeweler who cared about good workmanship and not how many settings they can crank out....then take the repair orders to the quacks who made it in the first place for some compensation.

If all your stones are loose only a few months into wearing it he probably got the wrong size and the ring was moved too far up or down. Your setting was thrown out of round making the prongs loose. A good jewler would have known this and recast the ring.

If they reported the neccesary "repair" while you were getting it cleaned I would have gotten a second opinion. They tend to make mountains out of molehills to generate some sales when you shell out the fifty bucks a prong to fix it.

It would totally piss me off. Geez, I'm upset that I've been engaged for a week and still haven't been able to wear my ring because it needs to be sized. The jeweler said 7 to 10 days and that just feels like an eternity. Once I get that ring back, it is never coming off my finger.

that sounds horrible if it is taking so much time just to get it fixed before the wedding then whats gonna happen afterwards?? how many more times during your wedding must you send it away for a repair that lasts 10 days. maye im just posessive and i dont even let my daughters touch my wedding or engagement rings. but if i were in your shoes i might want to consider getting another ring.

  • Before you let them send it out again ask that they show you exactly how the big stone is loose......maybe I'm being skeptical but...

...did you have your ring appraised? If so, after you get it back, whatever the decision...take it back and make sure the ring hasn't been 'tampered with"...if you know what I mean...just to play it safe..to many slick operators out there.........Good Luck.

I would be really peed off, yes, mine also had a stone that fell out on my wedding day, it took them 6 weeks to repair it and I was really annoyed as I was without my ring for all that time!!

I would be upset - mostly because I don't trust jewelers - when I take mine in... they clean it for me right then and there... I hope they are not switching out the diamonds on you for lower grade... make sure you check the number on the diamond under the microscope to see if it matches the one on your paperwork. Good luck!!!

Oh, I'd be ripping someone a new one! Personally I'd take it back to the place where it was bought and let them have it for such poor quality.

  • 1 decade ago

That stinks- you do expect better quality than that- And I don't like to have mine off at all either. But at least they caught it before they fell out-that would've felt worse I think.

I would be upset too, why didnt they notice the prong when they noticed the stones. I would have let them have it.
