If you stick to a schedule, it should have already been housetrained, but all dogs are different and some are a lot harder to potty train. We stuck to a schedule and crate trained and our rottie was potty trained in 3 weeks.

Puppies really do not have control of their bodily functions until they are about 5/6 months old. You can never be sure up until this age but suddenly they start to be able to hold on and by the age of 6 months should be fully housebroken, with a lot of help from you of course.
Still keep up the routine of taking the pup outside immediately it wakes up in the morning, after every meal and also after you play with it and always last thing at night before it settles down for the night.
You may get the odd accident but on the whole they will go through the night and usually wait until you take them outside each time.

I think it depends on many things. The breed, how often you are at home, how consistent the training is, how intelligent the dog is.....typically, a dog doesn't reach maturity until after 1 year of age. My dogs have typically been house trained at about 8-11 months. And I mean that in that they understand what going outside means....But to fully trust them not to make an accident when left alone...about 11/2 - 2 years of age. For me, I think it takes longer because I work full time and I have a middle school child that when he comes home at 2:30, he isn't always watching and allows accidents to happen. Anytime the training isn't consistent and the puppy feels they need to go and decide to go in the house, it pushes the training back and makes it a little more difficult to train them.
Now my parents have a standard poodle...smart breed, and my parents are retired, so they can be consistent in training and are there all day to take their dog outside. They told me their dog was "trained" at 2 months....only one accident, they said....but then again, they never allowed accidents to happen because they were taking him out so regularly.

Well my cockers are usually housetrained by 9 months. They are pretty good from 5 months but they are the dizzy blondes of the dog world and tend to forget what they went out for. I have known some pups be clean at 4 months and some not till a year old. Depends on the dog.

It is different in every dog, just like children.
For example I have three dogs at present, all the same breed, all different lines. One came to us at 8 weeks old and never ever did she wee or anything in the house. The other two had occasional accidents, but I take them outside as soon as they wake up, after eating, and in between, and they soon get the message. I usually get mine trained day and night within two weeks, but my friend has a Jack Russell that is 6 months old and still having accidents.
I am really against crate training, as if a puppy wants a wee bad enough they will usually do it in the crate, and then it is lying in damp bedding. If you want to train your dog you need to be there and have plenty of patience, not shut it away in a prison.

This is a loaded question. :) It really depends on consistency. It also depends on the size of dog and how long do you expect it to be "safe in the house" by itself. You also have not stated if you are having trouble with house breaking.
I tell people they can start house training right away, crate training at 10-12 weeks if they choose, which does help, and just be CONSISTENT. Chances are, at this age, your puppy understands the "concept" of where to go. The issue now is can his bladder hold it for as long as you want him to. If you expect him to hold it while you are at work for 8 hours I think you will be disappointed and you are setting him up for failure. Remember he is just a baby. If you will be gone for long periods of time then perhaps you can get a neighbor to let him out for you or hire someone in to come once or twice while you are away during the day. There are services out there that do this sort of thing.
Remember, if you come home to an accident, DON'T scold him, it is too late and he does not associate his mess with why you are scolding him. It will only prolong training by stressing him out. If every time you come home you get mad at him (he does not understand why you are upset) he will start to worry even before you arrive and this can actually make him go potty out of stress. You arriving home should be a happy time, he has been waiting for you all day and looking forward to your arrival.
The best thing to do, if you have not chosen to crate train, is to keep him confined to one room only that has no carpet. Give him some toys and a blanket(this is easily washable) to lay on. When you get home take him out immediately and give him loads of praise when he goes outside.
If you do decide to crate train, it is a great tool. You can wean them away from it later. Just because he/she is in a crate now does not mean that will be forever. As an adult they can have free run of the house once you are sure of their reliability in holding it.

I had a lab pup at 3 mouths and was not house trained he messed up about 3 times but was easy trained it all depends on how you train him some dogs learn quick some dont

At 4 1/2 months, assuming you've had your puppy since it was around 8 weeks old, it should be housetrained already (with perhaps the odd accident). If done correctly, housetraining only takes a couple of weeks with the average puppy.

I had a little dachie that took a year to train but have had other dogs who were trained by 10 weeks.
The trick is to take the dog outside every half an hour. Stay with her and as soon as she has done her wee, praise her and bring her straight back in. She will soon learn.
Good luck.

The puppy's bladder will not be developed enough to hold it through the night until about 6 months. Until then, plan on getting up once -twice a night to take puppy out to potty.
