I have a pain in my lower ribs whenever I cough, and sometimes when I cough, I cough up mucus with some blood.
It's been going on about a week now. Any ideas as to what I have?
edit: it's actually all of my ribs, but feels worse in the lower ribs.

Cough with blood is a fairly common complaint, but can be a sign of a serious disorder. The most common reasons are due to bronchitis, bronchiectasis (abnormal dilation of airways, usually after an infection), and cancer. Pneumonia can also cause bloody cough (including TB).
Regardless of the cause, you should be evaluated by your doctor. It is also important to report to him/her how much blood you are coughing up (streaks, teaspoon, cups, or more?).

If anyway possible get to and ER or go to the doctor. You need x-rays and blood work done. Sounds like possibly you have pnuemonia with you coughing so much and the color of your mucus. You need an antibiotic like Pencillin,Erythromiacin or Zithromax. As far as the pain in lower ribs, it's probably a pulled muscle from all the coughing. But it would hurt for you to take a muscle relaxer.Hope this helps. you probably have a chest cold........but it could also be pneumonia or flu.......you REALLY need to get to a doctor if you are coughing up blood with your mucus.....you can buy Mucinex-D over the counter and that will get that junk out of your chest but if you are running any sort of fever - get to a doctor. as far as the rib pain - you have more than likely pulled a slight costal/rib muscle due to coughing so much......and it does take some time for those muscles to heal.....

An infection in your lungs or the lining of your oesophagus could be the reason for the blood. The reason it hurts the most at the bottom of your ribs, could be due to the diaphragm, which is one of the mechanisms that control breathing. The pressure on your diaphragm due to an infection or disease could explain the pain you feel. Diseases could include:
Pneumonia and tuberculosis
Pulmonary embolism
Look them up or simply get an appointment with your GP or doctor. Immediately. You never mess around with lung infections, it could cost you your life.
Good luck.

anytime you cough up blood....you need medical attention by your MD. You gave too little information to tell you anything more.
