How does this food label add up?
I am reading the food label for Kellogg's All Bran cereal. It lists 1 gram of fat, 23g of carbs (9 grams insoluble fiber, 1 gram soluble fiber, 6g of sugars and 7g of other carbohydrate) and 4g of protein. 1 gram of fat = 9 cals, 23g of carbs = 92 cals, and 4g of protein = 16 cals. Add this up and you get 117 calories but the box lists 80 calories. The only answer I can think of is that the fiber is already subtracted out in the total, but that isn't exact and I didn't think they did that.
I know that it SHOULD be accurate, the fact is that it isn't, and thus the question.
Fat is 9 calories per gram. It says so at the bottom of the label, as well as in all other sources of information I have come across.

Carbohydrates include sugar and starch...
Fats, or lipids, are nutrients in food that the body uses to build nerve tissue (like the brain) and hormones. The body also uses fat as fuel. If fats that a person has eaten aren't burned as energy or used as building blocks, they are stored by the body in fat cells. This is the body's way of thinking ahead: By saving fat for future use, it plans for times when food might be scarce.
A calorie is a unit of energy that measures how much energy food provides to the body. A gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories. A gram of protein also contains 4 calories. A gram of fat, though, contains 9 calories — more than twice the amount of the other two.
1 gram of fat = 9 Cals
of the 23 grams of carbs, fiber just helps you poo, so you have 13 grams of carb, = 52 cals
0h the soluable gram of fiber, = 3 cals, well its only about 3 cals actually, as the bran is insoluable, and this is the germ, is full of vitimines
and 4 g of protein = 16 Cals
total = 80 cal's

ok, if I am not mistaken,
the sugars are part of the carb calculation. Where did you get the formula that 1g of fat = 9 cals?
Try writing to the maker of the product
