Mormons, what specifically is inaccurate in this cartoon?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zy0d1HbItOo
I would be interested to know where it misrepresents Mormon beliefs. Thanks.
Thank you both.
Ashley: I've heard from some Mormons about some beliefs which do seem represented in the film... about God-the-Father having a wife who creates spirit children, that women need to be married to enter the highest heaven, and that certain Israelites came to this continent and had wars (hell, I even saw the re-enactment of that at the Hill Cumorah Pagaent). That's why I'm asking about which parts aren't true. I have no doubt that some aren't, but which ones?
Gumby: Thanks, that's a helpful website.
Cartoons are just as good as any medium for getting points across. They can illustrate ideas and are sometimes accurate. That's why I'm asking.
Here nor there: How do I watch the General Conference?

This film has elements of truth but it is not intellectually honest. Furthermore, many of the things discussed are considered opinion and not official church doctrine. But overall the film is presented in such a manner that anyone would think Mormons are crazy. You could do the same thing for any religion, culture, country, etc.
If you want to know what Mormons believe, watch general conference sometime. It happens twice a year. Listen to what is taught and make the decision for yourself.

Pretty much, the entire thing.
The movie was made by Ed Decker, a man who was excommunicated from the Church and repeatedly cheated on his wife, who later divorced him.
For future reference, Mormons don't worship Joseph Smith, we don't believe God has sex with Mary, we don't believe that when we die we will all be Gods, we DO believe in Jesus Christ and we believe he's the Savior, we believe in the Bible, we are NOT polygamists, we don't get married when we are 15, etc. Also, anything that does not come from a reliable webiste such as a website run by the LDS church, and LDS person, or another website such as religioustolerance.com will not have completely accurate info about Mormon Doctrine.
Source(s): EDIT: About the Israelites... well yes, we believe that a group of Israelis descended from the tribe of Joseph came to the Americas after God commanded them to leave Jerusalem. These peoples' descendants later became the Nephites and Lamanites, and they kept a record of their doings. This record is the Book of Mormon. As for God the Father creating little spirits, that's not entirely true. We DO believe he created all our souls somehow, but we don't know exactly how. - Anonymous1 decade ago
That video is an editing of the movie "The God Makers"
This is a rebuttal to the entire film. I haven't seen the full movie (which is pretty long) so some of the stuff they talk about isn't mentioned in the short video on youtube.
But mainly it's all distortions and down right lies - and the church didn't ban the video.
This video was made by Ed Decker who was excommunicated from the Church.

Hi, I am not a Mormon, in fact I am not of any faith or religion, I have never been a believer so to say.
However the whole thing concerning belief systems has always fascinated me.
Over the years I have spent time talking to people of many different belief systems, of which of course includes many of the various Christian sects (if I may use the word).
A few years ago I found myself in a series of conversion with pair of Mormon missionary here in Italy, I was curious to here there side of the story so I met with them a few times, for pizza and a chat, on one occasion they even gave me a copy of The Book of Mormon, which has it's place in my reference section for Religious study, I don't know how they would feel seeing it placed between the KJV and The Quran! ;-))
I subtly interrogated them about there belief system and it's meaning for them as people. they were both quite young (in there 20's) as is the practise it seems for Missionaries in the Morrmom church.
Anyway my conclusion as to this branch of Christianity, is that on a whole they're not so bad, as they do spend a little time in actively helping people rather than preaching to people, however my showing an interest was perceived wrongly and unfortunatly I felt I had to end the contact with them as they could accept that I was only curious as to their way of seeing things and they had no interest in see why I saw things in a slightly different way, It is a foolish man who tries to convinces others that their path is right without trying to understand to views of others.
Anyway I digress, back to your question, The cartoon takes their belief system, which has a strong base in some of the original gnostic and per church ideas of Christianity, and blows it out of all proportion empathising some things in a way to make the seem much more irrational than other Christian belief systems. It isn't really necessary or useful to do so.
I believe the reference to the many gods for example comes from the idea of accepting many differ ant forms of Christianity into the original faith, An Idea similar to the acceptance of the good Samaritan as being of the same one God, as the Samaritans would have been a sub form of the Omniscient God.
As to the idea of human followers becoming gods, this may seem very strange to followers of other Christian faiths, but there is good grounding for logic in this which comes from the gnostic teachings, although the word god takes it out of context, the principles was that we all should reach a state of enlightenment or perfection in this life time and therefore be as one with God, rather than remain the serves of the master.
It has a rather egalitarian note to it in it's pure form, at least in my view.
As to the colour of skin it must be remember that at the time of the Mormon church's formation, most White Christians were somewhat racist.
I am not trying to defend the Mormon church for all that it is, but fair's fair after all.

Here is a good article that will answer that question.

I will never understand why people think a cartoon can be representative of someone's beliefs.
Here's some info about the creator of that cartoon. Of particular interest is the one about whether or not he was poisoned. Keep in mind that the following website is from a couple who try to sway people away from the Mormon church. Even they know that that cartoon is a joke.

LDS General conferences are held the first week of April, ad the first week of October.
Go to the LDS.org site at that time, you can watch it through internet, or if you live around Idaho or Salt lake City, it is broadcast on local TV channels

To be honest.
The entire thing.
I don't consider myself LDS anymore but I have been baptized LDS and I grew up in it for most of my life.
That cartoon is funny but its not true at all.
EDIT: I'm completely serious. The whole thing is wrong and was created as propaganda so that people would think that the LDS religion was "weird" and more cult like than the other religions.

They hate the dark music for one. That pretty much starts and ends the thing. I listen to mormons carefully. No problems with the content. in any specific way.

Besides the polygamy its about right, but a lot of stuff has changed in the last few decades so it can appear more mainstream.
