Benjamin Franklin famously said, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."?

What else can you think of that might be such proof (I ask facetiously)? I consider that cooking might also fit! We don't just absorb nutrients--we can enjoy flavour and aroma, texture and satisfaction that comes with a good meal.

Update:

To those of you who responded that the correct quote was about wine, rather than beer--thank you...I didn't know that! And I do hate getting quotes wrong...

He actually never said that. It's a misquote drunks (like myself) like to use. He actually was speaking on the growing of grapes for the purposes of making wine, which he said was proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy. Many of our founders were wine connosuiers, beer was rarely consumed. Drunks nonetheless.

And this in no way answers your question. You're welcome.

I believe Franklin spoke of Wine....Many of the Founding Fathers had vineyards, and produced their own wine. Did Franklin not also preach moderation?

Beer bread, Carrots cooked in beer, Beer chili...all delicious and taste nothing of hops, which give beer its characteristic bitter flavour. All the alcohol cooks away, leaving only the flavour behind...

Though you may never have heard of it, I would say that Silphium (link 1) is proof that the Divine wants us to enjoy sex. Unfortunately sex proved to be so popular that the herb which naturally prevented pregnancy is now extinct. Pity.

If he was talking about Theakstons Old Peculiarity he may have had a case. But he was probably talking about American beer, proof positive that there is no god.
