A short wrench and a lot of patience.

they make short or what I call stubby wrenches. Other than that it is a pain in the neck. Especially putting the new one back together. You get the thermostat in and move the housing in place and the thermostat falls. I know of no other ways but the stubby wrench and like the one before me noted a lot of patience.
