Actually, there are "air guns' in .50 caliber and larger. The first one I read of was actually used by the lewis and clark expedition and was used to harvest deer and other game. We make the mistake of thinking of the smaller air guns that are so common, but in fact, there have been, and still are numerous airguns of large enough caliber, and with enough power to hunt medium sized game. So, yes, it is true, but no, it's not done with the smaller 177 or even .22 caliber airguns we shot in our back yards.

I read an article many years ago about air guns at the turn of the century up through about the 20's. It focused on uses other than small game and plinking. They have been used as sniper rifles and to take larger game in Africa. The calibers were quite large and of course, very powerful. Several photos of these large air rifles were included. I don't think anyone makes large caliber airguns (larger than .22 anyway), much anymore.

Some of the first air guns used were indeed, powerful enough to use for humans or game. The Louis and Clark expeditions carried 2 of these guns. They were full sized rifles or muskets. They amazed the Indians with their quiet use.

An air rifle being used to kill someone quietly was mentioned in one of the Sherlock Holmes books but I cant recall which.

Yes, they can be used to kill humans, but that was the ones back in time. I doubt anyone makes one that powerful now.

Believe it or not, Lewis and Clark had an air gun on their exploration of the US. I know little about it except to say that it was powerful enough to kill medium size game. I am not sure if it is still in existance or not. I would love to see it and see how it worked.

in missouri this year they are letting you use an airgun for deer for the upcoming season. i don't have the info with me, but if i remember right it has to be either .40 or .44 and larger.

i know several are made in .44 and .50 with a speed and energy of roughly a .44 special.

if a person were to get a deer within 40 yards they should be ok for a shot.

Well. The "Air Gun" that they are talking about is not how the projectile is fired but how the propellant is set off. There are air guns for all kinds of rounds. The air powers the firing pin that sets off the bullet.
