Did Jesus say that you shouldn't do animal sacrifices?

The idea that God's followers should sacrifice animals is all through the bible. Why don't Christians still do this? Is there a passage somewhere that says "God was just kidding" or "God changed his mind?"

Update:

Sorry Mike, can't let you off that easy:

Genesis 4:4

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.

Genesis 8:20-21

And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a sweet savour.

Genesis 15:9-10

And he [God] said unto him [Abraham], Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another.

Exodus 20:24

An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

Exodus 29:11-37

And thou shalt kill the bullock be

Update 2:

I am actually looking for a verse here, not an opinion.

Mat 12:7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

1Co 8:4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

Heb 7:24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

Heb 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

    Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Heb 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

Animal sacrifice grow to be no longer the only way for forgiveness of sins in accordance to the Torah. yet animal sacrifice grow to be certainly a factor of the religion, and as yet another answerer reported, the fundamental individuals would not have quickly carried out this. the recent testomony speaks of the night of training for the Passover. The training for the passover in touch getting the lamb waiting for sacrifice. only via fact the NT would not explicitly state that the disciples did no longer save with the custom of animal sacrifice does no longer mean they did no longer. It would not state that they did no longer the two. and that they have been good Jews, so of path they could have. The NT would not let us know each ingredient that got here approximately. in fact, it hardly tells us something approximately Jesus's formative years. Does this mean he did no longer have an formative years? of path no longer. It only skill the NT did no longer point out it. Even after the crucifixion, there have been some Christians who persevered to furnish sacrifice. maximum did no longer, yet there are circumstances of Christians offering animals in Europe centuries after the crucifixion. i'm uncertain why they did this.

Animal sacrifices were required under the OLD covenant.

Jesus replaced the old and temporary covenant with the NEW covenant, which required only the one time, once for all, perfect sacrifice of Christ, for the sins of the world.

The Jews had a hard time accepting that, so after 40 years, God sent the Romans into Jerusalem, and they burned the Temple, which under the Jewish law, was the only place sacrifice was permitted.

After that ... no more animal sacrifices.

I never understood why God would want animals sacrificed in the first place. I know he demanded the best of whatever that particular person had, such as the best wheat, or the best cow or pig or whatever that person had. But why would he want us to sacrifice these things instead of working harder to do good deeds for others, or spending more time dedicated to learning how God wants them to be. I just don't get it.

Animal sacrifices were ONLY ever used for repenting of certain, specific sins. It was NEVER the only route to atonement in Judaism. And usually the animal was eaten afterwards, so it was dinner!

Jews atone through prayer, making amends directly to the injured party, and also on our Day Of Atonement, YOM KIPPUR, which is the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar. We have no need of animal sacrifices whatsoever.

Christ clearly said "thou shalt not kill".

Christ spoke of Spiritual reality, and Spiritual Reality is based on and operates in conjunction with the Law of Karma. Each life form has an allotted number of Tatwas, or elements of life. Warm blooded animals have four Tatwas, and this is only one Tatwa less than Man.

As ye sow, so shall ye reap is the Law of Karma. Christ was about reducing ones Karmic load, not increasing it.

    Jesus advocates murder and death:

Jesus condemns entire cities to dreadful deaths and to the eternal torment of hell because they didn’t care for his preaching. Matthew 11:20

Jesus, whose clothes are dipped in blood, has a sharp sword sticking out of his mouth. Thus attired, he treads the winepress of the wrath of God. (The winepress is the actual press that humans shall be put into so that we may be ground up.) Revelations 19:13-15

The beast and the false prophet are cast alive into a lake of fire. The rest of us the unchosen will be killed with the sword of Jesus. “An all the fowls were filled with their flesh.” Revelations 19:20-21

A few other things about Jesus:

Jesus says that those who have been less fortunate in this life will have it even worse in the life to come. Mark 4:25

Jesus sends the devils into 2000 pigs, causing them to jump off a cliff and be drowned in the sea. Clearly Jesus could have simply sent the devils out, yet he chose instead to place them into pigs and kill them. This is called animal abuse. Mark 5:12-13

Jesus kills a fig tree for not bearing figs, even though it was out of season. Jesus must not be as smart as Christians would have us believe, for he was retarded enough to do something this silly. You’d think the son of god (god incarnate) would know that trees don’t bear fruit in dry season. Mark 11:13

Luke 12:47 Jesus okays beating slaves........

Can this really be the man Christians worship and live their life by his example???

sounds like a nasty piece of work to me....

no animal should suffer torture by man....they can not speak out for there rights so man should only protect and look after them not cut there throat while still alive and let them slowly die in so much pain .....we don t agree with the ISIS doing it to Christians or none Christians the same principle should apply to animal cruelty ,no true god should want his creation /children/pets to suffer in the hands of evil men ....therefore this sacrifice system is that of evil man given by a evil force that is not godly therefore it must be of evil origin as god is love........the bible is full of godly stories but also full of man s fingerprints changing things and adding things to suit authorities and the kings of the countries at the that time, half taken by original script, and half made up rules to suite......there are so many lost books/chapters and scripts deliberately kept out of the bible, gods book by man........for selfish, greed, controlling and power reasons......typical man the sinner......minister carl.

Christians don't do this, Jews do. Animal sacrifices were done in the Old Testament to get rid of people's sin. Then Jesus came and was crucified. He is everyone's sacrifice for forgiveness of sin. Including yours. We don't need to sacrifice animals anymore because of what Jesus did for us. We just need to believe in Him and call Him Lord and follow be obedient unto Him.
