Global Warming???

Last week meteorologists predicted sunshine and 50 degree weather, instead, it snowed 8 inches. If these Global Warming folks are so good they can predict the weather 100 years in advance, why can't they predict the weather ONE WEEK in advance?

it doesnt matter what kind of links or charts people post, it still doesnt mean it will happen, without a doubt. They cant predict anything. Not 5 days ahead of now, not 100 years either.

Seriously, Ive seen 2 different articles from NASA, one saying the Sun's "conveyor belt" is slowing, indicating a weaker solar maximum for the next one, and a one saying the exact opposite. I DONT CARE what the organization is, Its hard to believe them when they try to predict something 20 years off. They know just as well as we do that they will be DEAD before that time comes anyways, so why should they care if they are wrong?

Arguements like this make skeptics "look less intelligent" but I think its a valid arguement because it just shows that during our daily routine, we dont even notice a difference. The only differences seen are in the arctic... but for all we know that could just be caused by some atlantic current variation (***mentioned in "The winds of change" by eugene linden***) which evidence was found for in sea floor sediment cores from the north atlantic/ arctic oceans.

The study if Global Warming is not rooted in prophesying the future, but studying the earth as it is. The effects of Global Warming cannot be predicted, only theorized. Global Warming has been affirmed scientifically by measuring the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, by studying the overall trends in the weather, by measuring the rates of the polar icecaps melting, etc... Every region of the world is not going to experience climate change in the same way. Global Warming is a fact. It is why the United Nations created the Kyoto Protocol (an attempt curb the effects of climate change), because the world basically understands that Global Warming is real and people are accelerating it.

Climate and weather are actually two different fields of study, and the level of predictability is comparably different. Think of this as the difference between trying to predict the height of the fifth wave from now that will come splashing up the beach versus predicting the height of tomorrow's high tide.

Climate is defined as weather averaged over a period of time, generally around 30 years. This averaging over time removes the random and unpredictable behavior of weather. This by no means says that it is necessarily easy to predict climate changes, but clearly seizing on the weatherman's weekly forecast failures to cast doubt on a climate model's 100 year projection is an argument of ignorance.

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

because they are very different things

    1) is a very precise prediction on a small area on a relatively small time period.

    2) is a long term Global Trend

The two are quite different, in terms of techniques and accuracy.

first off - your meteorologist sucks

second - a long term average is easier to predict

They can't. We have no idea what's going to happen.
