Do you all agree with me that selfishness is the main source of our problems as humans?

It may lead to:

desire to dominate others

racial discrimination

arrogance

unjustifiable war

genocide.....

May I submit that it is the love of power and control that is a main source of human problems.

Selflessness is a value, and being Selfish will only lead to many problems in the long road of life. But, I do not totally agree to the statement above.

There are other sources of problems, as humans, we are naturally imperfect. Because of this flaw, humans allow sinful thoughts to form in their minds.

They will think of many things, like why life is so unfair to them, why do others have better status, be it financially or socially. They will then become jealous and therefore initiate what is known as the "start of chaos". Contemplation of "what should be done to fix the situation" will then be action plans.

Selfishness cannot take the blame for problems arising from humans entirely, it is only a portion of all the trouble caused. If we actually sit down and take the time to review the cases where other factors were involved during our lifetime, we would find that greed and jealousy are also one of the natural sins that reside in a human.

Therefore, I conclude that there are other sources of our problems as humans, but this does not mean that I disagree with the fact that selfishness also contributes to a certain percentage of these problems.

While you have a good point, the selfishness that leads to those other issues is based on misperceptions about life. So, I would say that the main source of our problems as humans are misconceptions, specifically that:

    1) Human beings are separate from each other.

    2) There is not enough of what human beings need to be happy.

    3) To get the stuff of which there is not enough, human beings must compete with each other.

    4) Some human beings are better than other human beings.

    5) It is appropriate for human beings to resolve severe differences created by all the other fallacies by killing each other.

I would say selfishness is one that led to your mentioned human problems. Selfishness drives humans to dominate their group, institution or more so a society. This contribute to the arrogance of people from others just to pursue their motives of self-desire. Indeed greed is also a great contributory factor to the main source. They want luxuries in life because of the egoistic feeling of a person. No doubt you are correct and such statement is very true.

Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

    Exactly,

Selfishness is the main point. In every relation even in husband wife, both wants others to sacrifice or bend a little. they dont think that we love this person so let it go, NO, they both want each other to sacrifice or to compromise. they both becomes selfish.

if this much close relationship is selfish then what do u expect from whole wolrd, from all human.

There are very few people who are less selfish ( not completely selfless); like at one point they are so selfless and very devoted but at certian point they are selfish.

    thats the world i guess

No, I don't think it's quite that simple. One could easily argue that selfishness is very much necessary for the continuance of our civilization.

"It is not from the benevolence of the butcher the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity, but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities, but of their advantages." -- Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations

A society altogether based on altruism is for communists, and history shows that communism doesn't work. But on the other hand, we need a government to keep selfishness under control. Of course, the type of selfishness spoken of by Adam Smith is *enlightened* self interest, the kind where you benefit others by benefiting yourself. If those butchers, brewers, or bakers were to use phony weights on their food scales, they would be defrauding their customers and such greed should be punished and prevented from occurring.

Selfishness is based on false ego's concept of separation and division, which triggers "I, me, mine" thinking. When we see "other" we are caught up in the false ego. In the world of duality the pendulum swings from one extreme to the other...from love to hate, from hot to cold, from friend to enemy, from success to failure, and back again in constant movement, satisfying the ego's tyrrany to control, conquer, and divide. A steady stream of random, provocative, often absurd thoughts relentlessly produce a sense of self and non-self (or other), which brings into play all of life's little dramas and traumas. When we can begin to see the impermanence of thoughts (produced by ego thinking) and their unreliability, we can begin the process of unpeeling the onion of ego. As layer after layer is discarded we move closer and closer to our true nature, no longer victims of ping pong thinking. Soon we see that there is no separation, that self and other are one in the One. We all share the same consciousness, the same life force, that which is permanent and unchanging.. Everything else is in constant change and flux. To know oneness with all of life is to move beyond differentiation, separation, judgment, and selfishness. This is to enter the Divine Truth of our being. Selflessness is the new byproduct, for what we do for others, we do for ourselves, and for all living beings. We become the conduits for Source, Its willing and conscious partner. Now we are fully awake and aware, and we become willing participants with One/Source/God/All That Is/Light/Love...and this is all there is, All That Is.

never, selfishness it is the word mostly missunderstood by the people, if ure not selfish how can you fall in love with you, how can create a beautifull painting or poem? selfishness means to be myself, a selfish person can only love and respect his self, society always hungry for love and respect, a single person cant be asociety but 10 single person can be a society, if they all respect and love his self, ther are noproblem will arise in society

No, I do not agree. I believe we must have a certain amount of selfishness to survive in this world. Perhaps lack of empathy would be more appropriate. Humans singly do not necessarily desire to dominate others nor do they cause war, genocide.

I agree, though with a rider... the real culprit is the narrow selfishness that is highly materialistic... the broader selfishness of improving oneself emotionally or spiritually etc. are to be excluded.
