How many hours sleep should my 2 year old be getting overnight???

My 2 year old goes to sleep around 9pm and wakes around 5am, I just wonder if this is enough sleep for him. He also has a 2 hour nap after lunch. I read somewhere that at his age he should be getting at least 14 hours of sleep every day, at the moment he gets about 10 hours sleep. Should he be sleeping more at night and if so how do I get him to sleep longer.

Update:

8 hours at night

2 hour nap during the day

Update 2:

He has his moments (hey what toddler doesn't) but is generally very active and happy during the day.

studies show a child that young should be getting 12 hours of sleep a night. But hey, every child is different, if he's functioning and not walking around like a zombie, he's probably fine. don't worry so much - he'll grow up just fine!!

My 2 year old son goes to sleep between 8 and 9 and we have to get up at 6:30 in the morning to get our other 2 kids up and ready for the school bus. We normally lay back down sometime in the later morning for 1-2 hour nap. But, even today we didn't get a nap until almost 2 and he slept until 4 and still was sleeping before 9.

Is your son acting overtired? Is he falling asleep at lunch? At 2, my son would sleep from 9 until about 7 and take a 2-3 hour nap. Your son may be waking up because he is wet or thirsty. I keep a sippy cup with water by my son's bed. Also, if he wakes up around 5, don't let him get up. Tuck him right back in bed and try to get him back to sleep. Let him know that he has to sleep until the sun comes out or daylight.

He should be getting at LEAST 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Not a total of 10 a day. Cut back on the nap, until he's sleeping 10 hours. The reason for this is so the body can rejuvenate. The more sleep he gets at one time, the healthier he will be and he'll grow taller.

About 10 hours sounds right. Plus his nap.

As he gets older he will want to get out of that nap taking. Put him to bed and just like us he will wake when he's had enough. Don't let him take a nap to late in the afternoon. He won't be as sleepy when he goes to bed.

How is he during the day? Is he active? Happy?

If so he is likely getting enough sleep.

My 2 y/o daughter sleeps from 7pm-7am, with a 30 minute nap during the day.

There are always guidelines for sleep (among other things) but a better indicator is his personality.

About 10 hours. I would get rid of the afternoon nap so he gets up later & not at 5.
