HE really didn't want the people of Israel to have a king, HE wanted them to rely fully on HIM through the Prophets and the priests. The people wanted to be like everyone else and have a king, so HE gave them one, which was of their choice, Saul, who was nothing but trouble. Goes to show you
that it isn't what is on the outside that counts, but inside.

There were two different types of leadership in the Testament a theocracy and a monarchy. The reason God gave kings is because the people begged for one. They wanted a monarchy. Obviously, with God in charge things would have been better but the people would not obey and wanted a person to follow. However, as the bible testifies, Kings are people and subject to failure and leading people into evil. Some of the kings were good and some were bad. In either case, the people needed a Savior and so with either a King or a Theocracy - there would be issues.

In old times people really believed in Gods. If king was good he was from God;. Mandate from heaven. If there were no harvest or other bad things then it meant - God does not loves this king any more- so anyone who thought he haves love of god can be a king. If he succeeded, it was considered will of the Gods. It so was in almost all ancient regions Mesopotamia, China.
So. I think it was good. If king was bad he got overturned. King did not had power to keep people working for him if he was not a good king. In later times - middle ages situation was a bit different. Then even evil king could say that he have rights from birth and so all must follow him. But because of it there was wars. Weak king could not keep his kingdom and if king was smart enough to be strong, it sorta means that he was good.

As someone else said, all of their human kings were mere sinful humans, so God allowing them to hve human kings had a similar function as his giving them the Law: the results showed that no one could fulfill God's prophecies to restore the earth $ humanity back to perfection, except the Creator, through his designated heavenly government. It also served to show just how much humans need help, & cannot undo the dammage that has been done, by themselves. So, it actually helped to make God's case!

It covers that in the Bible. The people wanted Kings because the other nations had them.....God didnt want to give them a King..but they wanted it so he finally did it.
Kings were both bad and good for the Israelites. Some like Soloman were good for a while and then later deviated from God's path, while others such as David were pretty good influences. Of course, there was a string of bad kings, but i belive the names were mentioned in passing...wait...Saul was a bad one.

The people thought they needed a king. God gave them a king. Some were good, God-fearing men, others became full of themselves and were brought down.
