How does one get their cat to stop scratching the wall?

We've got scratching posts but he keeps going after this one spot on the wall in the middle of the night.

Tape some aluminum foil to the wall. The cat won't like the feel of the metal on his nails.

Weird, must be something about spot on the wall that he likes.

To get him away from the wall:

    1. Get a spray bottle and fill it with water. When you see him do it, spray his face. He won't like and it won't hurt him. Cats are trainable.

    2. Spray the area with a perfume/air freshener, cats generally avoid strong fragrances because their noses are so sensitive. Make sure you spray far enough away form the wall so that it doesn't stain

To get him to play with the scratching post.

    1. Take his paws and press on them so that the inner crevices of his pads are exposed and rub them on the cat post. That way his smell gets transferred to the scratching post and vice-versa.

    2. If your cat likes cat nip or treats, attract him to the post by putting some there.

    3. Buy a different kind of scratching toy. Your cat may like the dry wall because he enjoys the satisfaction of tearing it apart. They have cheap scratching toys made of cardboard that have the very same effect!

    Good luck!

you can buy cat repellent sprays that you can spray on anything from furniture, to probably walls. Go to your local pet store and they should have some in the cat aisle. Just follow the bottles directions and it should get him to stop. I know my cats stopped scratching the carpet on my stairs when I used the stuff. As well you may want to try rubbing some cat nip into his scratching posts to attract him to those instead. Guaranteed he will love it.

Either de-claw it or put some cat nip on the scratching post to draw him to it. You can try spraying some kind of 'stay away' spray on the spot if it won't damage the wall.
