why do people answer questions when they have no clue of the answer?

I'm just curious, why answer if you don't know?

I completely agree and find this very aggravating too. It also bugs me when you give a good answer and the person asking the question dosen't pick a best answer and some idiot that gave a stupid answer votes for his own answer. I can understand if you don't really like any of the answers but usually this happens after they give you a thumbs up. And it must be the person asking that gave the thumbs up because none of the other answers have one. I think it is just common courteousy to acknowlege a good answer.

Because when they read a question, they have something immediate to say, but since it's online they can't.

Or they want it subconsciously known they were there.

Or they just want the points.

I think they just want the two points. You get them even if your answer isn't helpful. I think that's why.
