Why is my couch giving me a headache? How can I clean it?

My boyfriends couches are giving me a head ache! My boyfriend just moved his old but new couches in. They are new in the sence that they were hardly used but old in the sence that they have been sitting in a gargae for 5 years.

They look nice and everything and we got them steamed cleaned today but when I sit on them they are giving me a massive headache and my nose starts to get stuffy.

Now I have a feeling that it's cause they have been sitting in a garage for so long. But what is causing the head ache? Will it stop? what can I do about this? Will I have to get rid of them?

Please answer your question fully. No yes or no questions will be accepted.

Update:

We doused the couch with the anti allergen fabreeze!!!! we have 8 animals living with us 6 ferrets and 2 cats!

I also never had a real bad allergy problem till this couch!! I am sitting on a different chair and im feeling a little bit better so I KNOW it's the couch! lol

Update 2:

So far the only logical answer seems to be mold. The thing is I also explore abandoned building for a hobby and there s mold EVERY where, but I guess i dont really sit there.

Update 3:

Yeah I think it's mold. Is there anyway to reove it?

the headache would be triggered from allergies. Like the stuffy nose. If they were cleaned and it is doing still ... maybe the cleaning stuff ... if before too ... then maybe dust, mildew smell. You could try airing them out. Use spray Lysol. Good luck with that. Take a sudafed and Tylenol. Hope you head gets better. Hot showers also help.

Give them some time and try airing out the house and it may get better. Your sinuses are prob. sore as well. Around your nose, cheeks and forehead. You may have to get rid of them but i would try some of the other suggestions first.

If you got them steam cleaned it is very possible that some of the leftover chemicals are still lingering and that is what is giving you the headache. Try using Febreeze for fabrics, also just give it a couple days, it will get better.

Maybe there is something you are allergic to. Or maybe it's not the couch it can be something else in the environment. If you are positive its the couch try sitting somewhere else or if the headaches continue get rid of the couch.

I'd let the coaches air out a while. If they were in the garage they could be moldy; it sounds like you're allergic to something in them. Maybe look under cushions, under the coach to make sure it's clean.

They probably have mold in them...which if they do you can't do anything about them and you NEED to get them out of your home as soon as possible...because the mold can spread to other things in your home....which can result in coughing, headaches and other problems....and leaving the furniture in there will KEEP you sick!

    Hi,

    they could have mold issues.

i dunno a lot about mold, but you could check out black mold, which is quite a problem - and causes some serious problems.

google 'black mold' there are surely plenty of sites about it, see if it could be in the couch and affecting you.

    good luck

could be the cleaner that was used on them....are they dry..try to get that allergen febreeze....and spray them down and let them sit like while you are at work and see if that helps any at all..i know febreeze helps with alot of smells...it got rid of the moth balls out of our loveseat that had been in storage for a year....

Maybe he had a pet that you're allergic to that was roaming all over the couch. You prob need to vacuum it to death too. and Febreeze it.

try using allergenic febreez, it works wonders for mold, animal smell, and cigarette smoke.. just spray it on there once every two days.. you can buy it anywhere.
