What's the main difference between form 1040 and 1040A?
I'm muddling through taxes and the forms I've printed out have already killed a tree. Is there a quick way to summarize (in plain English) why you'd choose one form over the other?

I always use the 1040 because I have been a professional and it works for everyone. The 1040A doesn't have all the schedules and the 1040EZ is a single page. They are fine if you don't hit something they don't have. The 1040EZ doesn't allow interest over 1,500 and I don't think you can itemize with a 1040A. If you are a renter, no long or short term gains no complications use the 1040EZ unless you have a reason not to then use 1040A unless you hit a complication it won't allow. You can just start with the 1040 if you think you might have something that the others don't allow.
IRS.GOV links to free tax filing so you can just use one and file a 1040.

The most common reasons for using form 1040 is that you itemize your deductions, or have adjustments not listed on the 1040A, or take one of the credits not listed on the 1040A, or you are filing a 1099-misc with non-employee compensation. There are others - for a more complete list see pages 8 and 9 of IRS Publication 17 - download it at irs.gov

What form you file depends on your financial situation. If your income is mainly from a W2 then you might want to use a 1040EZ or a 1040A.
However, if you have a more complex return then you will be forced to use a form 1040...and perhaps even more forms too.
There are very simple instructions available at IRS.GOV outlining what form you need to use. And, if you use a computer program...they will select the correct form for you.
Hope this Helps

Anyone can use a 1040 no matter how much they made. You can not use a 1040A if you are itemizing your deductions (completing a Schedule A). Do a 1040 and you will have no problems.

Both are usually appeals for things you ask for selfishly or ought to take care of yourself. The Lottery costs you a around 70 cents for each dollar of return on the long term, and it has only materialistic benefits. Prayer doesn t cost you anything, the results are based on the request s agreement with the perfect divine plan, and it can have eternal benefits. The Lottery will break your bank account, but investing in prayer builds your heavenly account -- if you have accepted the deposit that s waiting to take you out of the red.
