Do you think in Israel they'll ever understand what goes around comes around?
How can Israel possibly think they can treat Gazans as horrifically as they have and then expect no retaliation out of desperation? If Israel treats them with equalty, respect, and honours international laws, there will be no need for the homemade rockets launched from Gaza.
The top UN Humanitarian Affairs official, John Holmes, was just in Gaza and said he was shocked by what he saw. Read about here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080215/wl_mideast_af...
He told reporters at a news conference that the misery he saw was the result of the current closed border crossings with Israel and the "limited food and other materials allowed in."

Annt Hu - I can't believe you are advocating MORE violence and killing! ALL of it needs to stop and my point is it won't while Israel treats people this way. I believe you are the one that doesn't know what is going on. Please read the links I've provided.
Big Bobby - I am against all violence and I'm certainly not a Hamas supporter. However, I do understand because for the Gazans their only other option is to sit down and wait to starve to death. Yes, they could've started an agriculture business but because Israel controls the borders they allow their trucks of fruits and vegetables rot as wait to export. Give Israel's control of Gaza, how do you propose they do this?
Hamarker - Israel has NOT stayed quiet for 8 years. They have made life a living hell for Palestinians. I've been to Gaza twice and lived in the West Bank for 2 years and seen their daily struggles. Have you? Palestinians have been subjected to house demolitions, collective punishment, deportation, curfews, roadblocks, administrative detention, torture, restriction of movement, the separation wall, land expropriation and settlements, revocation of residency permits, and on and on.
And yes, I can answer why they haven't signed peace treaties - it is because they have been terribly unfair. The Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions explains it here: http://www.icahd.org/eng/faq.asp?menu=9&submenu=1 (go to page 2 of the FAQ)
Mr. X - You are sadly mistaken. Israel did withdraw from Gaza but they did not end the occupation. They still controlled all travel and trade! Consequently "Most industrial and agricultural activities in Gaza have collapsed, leaving more than 80 percent of the population dependent on food aid, he said. Rates of anemia and diarrhea among children, meanwhile, have skyrocketed by 40 percent and 20 percent over the past year. " http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic...
Lisa - You are absolutely right, it is very much like a concentration camp.
Big Bobby - One more thing you mentioned I want to address, and that's electricity in Gaza. According to a UN Situation Report dated Feb 8/08, Gazans are without electricity 8 to 12 hours a day. In June 2006 Israel destroyed the 6 transformers of Gaza's only power plant. See http://www.ochaopt.org/documents/Gaza%20Feb_08_200...
Also, many have criticized other Arab nations for not helping out. Well, thankfully today an article came out saying Egypt plans to provide all of Gaza's electricity - http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/959249.html
Hamarker - What Barak was offering was not contiguous land. It would be land carved up by ribbons of bypass roads only allowed by the settlers. That meant severe travel restrictions for the Palestinians and checkpoints all over.
Hamaker - I wish they would keep trying. The problem is the Palestinians don't believe that Israel has negotiated in good faith and have come to believe that peace treaties are not worth the paper they're written on. For example, there was a beautiful forested hill between Jerusalem and Bethlehem called Har Homa in Hebrew, and Jabel Abu Gneim in Arabic. The Israelis illegally confiscated land to take the hill and build settlements. During peace talks, they agreed to halt all construction on settlements but instead of stopping, they had the bulldozers go to the back of the hill and keep working. Now the hill is devoid of trees and has a settlement on it. Also, Israel has broken 65 UN resolutions whereas Palestine has broken none. Israel has also broken General Resolutions and Fourth Geneva Convention. For a list of some of these resolutions, go to http://www.jatonyc.org/UNresolutions.html It's like Palestine has given up. Palestinians also need better leaders (as does Israel).
Hamarker - agreed!
Helen - You are showing great ignorance here. It's obvious you have not read the links I provided. I suggest you do that before responding to several questions with the same lengthy 'copy and paste' rant.
Gamla Joe - Israel did not completely pull out of Gaza! They continue to control the airspace and the borders. They do not allow for the trade of goods to go in and out so the people of Gaza can survive! Also, you say Gazans are deliberately targeting civilians, which I agree is wrong but I understand because of their desperate situation. What about Israel's deliberate targeting of civilians? The people of Gaza have been given a situation that makes them very desperate and desperate people do desperate acts. Let's get to the root of the problem so everyone can have peace and justice.
Rossoner - Please see my comments to Gamla Joe. Also, most Palestinians to do support the notion of "pushing all Jews into the sea". They just want to live an unoppressed life where they have the same freedoms as others. What I see is that there are too many Jews wanting to eradicate Palestinians (sounds akin to pushing them into the sea, doesn't it?). BOTH should be allowed to live on that land side-by-side. Why should one side control the other?
Duke of Tudor - agreed. The problem, however, is that they are desperate and seem not to know what else to do. I wish they would use Gandhi's non-violent actions instead.
Gab - You say each side should acknowledge the others' right to exist and then say all supplies to Gaza should be shut off! Seems contradictory to me!

In my opinion, Israeli military/political leadership understands very well that horrific acts by Israel provoke a retaliation. They deliberately commit such acts in order to provoke that retaliation, for several reasons:
1) Israel is vastly superior militarily, and has virtually nothing to fear as a state from the homemade rockets or even terrorist bombs
2) The retaliation allow the leaders in power to generate political support among its own populace - nothing works like fear for uniting people behind a leader
3) The low-level conflict is extremely good for the business of making armaments in which Israel is heavily involved
4) The continued low-level conflict allows them to claim they cannot make peace - peace would mean painful sacrifices such as giving up most of the West Bank. Israel does much better with a war against basically helpless people than it would with an honest peace.
5) A true reconciliation between peoples of the region would in the long run probably allow some kind of return for the Palestinian refugees, long term, by agitation from neighboring states for their return and resettlement. As Zionists see it, equal rights for Palestinians is tantamount to the destruction of the "Jewish state".
Bear in mind Gaza is impoverished largely because Israel rounded up Palestinian Arabs in 1948 onward and sent them expelled them from homes and land, many ended up in Gaza. In the long run, the hatred generate by atrocities done in the name of the Jewish people (Zionist claim, disputed by many Jews) will be bad for the Jewish people, upon whom much of the blame falls in many cases unfairly. Nothing lasts forever. It is also bad for the people of Sderot whose suffering is so greatly exaggerated for propaganda purposes by Israel's supporters (it's ridiculously small when compared to the destruction in Gaza ) - the people of Sderot are held hostage by Israel's rejection of Gaza Hamas leaders' truce offers.
But I don't think in Israel they will ever understand this.

It is nice you support the UN.
Too bad the UN doesn't know their left hand from their right.
They can't even condem an explicit school killing in Israel, but yet at the same time, they can pass a thousand motions condeming Israel.
Go figure.
Oh, and ps: if you really care about the Palastinian plight, it will serve you well to tell Hamas to change it's charter for destroying Israel. I am sure that clause would not cause good harmonious relations with it's neighbour, nor would you expect the neighbour to greet it with open arms.
If you want to live eachother peacfully, the first stage is actually acknowledging eachother's existence.
In my eyes, Israel should shut off all it's supplies to the Palastinians, and let them cry in their pit that they dug themselves.

You're right, the Israelis should withdraw their troops from Gaza, then the gazans would would treat them respectfully. Oh wait they tried that....
From above: "Bear in mind Gaza is impoverished largely because Israel rounded up Palestinian Arabs in 1948 onward and sent them expelled them from homes and land, many ended up in Gaza."
Uh no, various arab states requested the "palestinians" (don't believe they were called that back then, but anyway...) leave their land to facilitate an all out attack on Israel. The attack wasn't successfull and oddly enough, the Israelis wouldn't let people trying to cooperate with their attackers back. Now that I think about it, the current situation IS what comes around.
From Above: "Most industrial and agricultural activities in Gaza have collapsed, leaving more than 80 percent of the population dependent on food aid, he said. Rates of anemia and diarrhea among children, meanwhile, have skyrocketed by 40 percent and 20 percent over the past year. "
If they spent half the energy they spend on trying to drive the Jews into the sea on creating an industrial/agricultural infrastructure, these numbers would be much lower. It's all about priorities, and hamas has shown that their priorities are completely misplaced.

Do you think Hamas will ever understand what goes around comes around? Let's be honest here - this wouldn't have happened if they hadn't shot those rockets out into Israel.
I'm not excusing the actions of Israel though. They have killed far too many people. One death is one death too many, whether it's a Palestinian or an Israeli. The way that Gaza and Israel have been treating each other is completely childish - it's back and forth, back and forth.
This is a very volatile area, and it is my greatest hope that one day there will be peace between these warring people. I'm pro-Israel but I'm also pro-Palestine, and it doesn't take a genious to see that this "eye for an eye" or "bombing for peace" mentality will NEVER EVER work.
Let's stop blaming each other and just work this out.
Shalom, Salaam

Hi Worldluv, your question should be directed to Hamas and other Palestinian militants. The militants just don't realize that they don't serve the best interest of their people by shooting missiles, rockets, and mortars at Israeli cities.
- Anonymous1 decade ago
Hi Wordluv, I do see the problem here. I am not sure what is right or wrong anymore I keep learning more from people like you and from people around the world in general; but there is another side to this story. Egypt allows Palestinians to come in and buy food etc. but they have to leave again If Egypt left the borders open that would be like giving in to Israel's demand. Israel always wanted that Palestinians leave their land and move to Egypt, Jordan or any other Arab land. This would mean that Palestinians would give up their land, which I previously thought would not be very wise.
The second problem is that Egypt can not take care of all Palestinians pouring into this country as Egypt is already struggeling to take care of her own people.
This holocaust has made me change my mind to a big degree. Today Palestinians are living as if they were living in a concentration camp and Egypt must let them in because this is inhumane.
. I don't know what could anyone possibly do to help the Palestinians as long the U.S. is a superpower and our leaders are useless.
I'll follow up and see what others have to say. Thanks to the internet we can hear the other side of every story.
Humanitarian wise we have to let them in but politically I believe this is not wise because Palestinians will lose their land once and for all.
i agree with sparkl what goes around comes around look at what happened to Sharon :)
Gypsy-cat 345 ;) thank you for backing up our statement. what goes around comes around

Worldluv, that's the beautiful thing about Karma: she'll come back around to bite ya on the @ss every single time.
May the Israelis get what's coming to them.
Helen: if any of us wanted to read "War and Peace", we'd be at the f*cking library right now.
Sparkle and Lisa: I heard that Jabba the Hut...oh, excuse me, Ariel Sharon...finally exploded from one too many bagels with cream cheese...

My friend it takes one to make war but two for peace.
Israel took a huge step when it pulled out of Gaza.
I ask you what was done in return?
You cannot ask that all your demands will be met and then (maybe) you will agree to the other sides demands.
Israel is constantly asked to take the first step, but I am still waiting for Gaza to take the second.
On another point can you give me an example of Jews before ,during, or after the holocaust trying to kill German civilians out of desperation?
The deliberate targeting of civilians is always unjustified and I am personally disgusted when anyone tries to excuse it with saying it is inevitable or justified. It never was even conceivable for my ancestors who faced persecution far beyond that of the Gazens. please, remember that.
Source(s): After all the above being said, I hope peace dose come, but I am at a loss of how. - Anonymous1 decade ago
They will a year from now after Jerusalem and Tel Aviv have been liberated. The name of the country is Palestine.
- hamarkerLv 41 decade ago
btw those homemade rockets and the rockets which aren't homemade and are russian standard rockets all of these kill and b/c israel has stayed quiet for 8 years it doesn't mean it doesn't have the right to protect itself just like any other country.,
if you think what u say is true then why have hamas refused to recgonize israel and sign a peace treaty?
how come after israel left gaza things just got worse?
i know you wish also for peace but u have to face the facts israel has started the peace process many times and the other side hasn't agreed to come to a agreement
can you answer this?
(edit: although what i wrote i do not think that peace is impossible- and i condemn any hurting of innocent civilians and i know that the palestinians want peace too but they have to say it!!)
ok those are excellent points and here is something from the second page if you can explain to me why the palestinians haven't offered a counter offer?
"Why didn't the Palestinians ever present a comprehensive permanent settlement proposal of their own in response to Barak's proposals?
The comprehensive settlement to the conflict is embodied in United Nations Resolutions 242 and 338, as was accepted by both sides at the Madrid Summit in 1991 and later in the Oslo Accords of 1993. The purpose of the negotiations is to implement these UN resolutions (which call for an Israeli withdrawal from land occupied by force by Israel in 1967) and reach agreement on final status issues. On a number of occasions since Camp David - especially at the Taba talks - the Palestinian negotiating team presented its concept for the resolution of the key permanent status issues. It is important to keep in mind, however, that Israel and the Palestinians are differently situated.
Israel seeks broad concessions from the Palestinians: it wants to annex Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem; obtain rights to Palestinian water resources in the West Bank; maintain military locations on Palestinian soil; and deny the Palestinian refugees' their right of return. Israel has not offered a single concession involving its own territory and rights. The Palestinians, on the other hand, seek to establish a viable, sovereign State on their own territory, to provide for the withdrawal of Israeli military forces and colonies (which are universally recognized as illegal), and to secure the right of Palestinian refugees to return to the homes they were forced to flee in 1948. Although Palestinian negotiators have been willing to accommodate legitimate Israeli needs within that context, particularly with respect to security and refugees, it is up to Israel to define these needs and to suggest the narrowest possible means of addressing them. "
they were offered 95% of what they asked is that not enough?
they have to compromise just as israel is compromising.
and if they want a different agreement then propose it were waiting eagerly for it!!! we have to go on the peace process again.
so what about a counter offer why not continue from there why stop everything - and wait for israel to offer again what about showing some real process from their side except only from israel. we are trying to get there - r they even trying? only abu mazen is trying in gaza they don't want to even hear about israel.
edit: ok then let's hope together both sides try harder. and if the world needs to intervene to support both sides b/c their leaders aren't doing the job to get to an agreement than i hope that the world does and that should be the next step but in the meantime it seems the majority of the arab world is not supporting the peace process b/c it is against their interest and you know who is paying the price b/c of this...
