Is a person required to go into combat if they were to join the military during a war?

It depends entirely on your MOS. Servicemen and servicewomen with non-combat MOSs, such as electronics, administrative jobs, vehicle maintenance, etc... they're not combat-based... meaning, even if you deploy to a war zone, you'd still do the job you're trained to do.
My son was over there for 7 months, and never heard or saw any combat action. He went, he did his job, and he came home. No knocking on doors with a gun in his hand, no patrolling streets... because of the MOS he chose. He's making his contribution by keeping those helicopters flying!

Not joining the military alone, no.
If your unit is assigned to combat, then yeah.
I have two friends one's in the Navy and he is in San Diego after spending a tour near Venuzuela, and I have another friend who is stationed in Germany, and saw only 1 tour in Iraq.

Depends on what unit your in and where your orders send you . We have troops all over the world more than in Iraq. But yes that is what the military is all about. But do say you are going straight into battle would be wrong.
