tips for surviving recession?

What are some things we should be doing to survive this "recession"? Right now, we have a some extra money, how should we use it? Stock up on food? put in savings? extra to mortgage? invest in euro? We have no credit card debt either..

What are you doing during this?

I try to look for bargains wherever and whenever I can. I don't usually buy brand names, try to use coupons as much as possible, and try to buy things on sale. I also go to discount stores and save a lot there. I combine trips to save gas, and make sure that it's someplace I need to go, as opposed to someplace I want to go. We also eat at home most of the time, and save a lot right there. If we do go out, we try to choose someplace that we might have coupons for or that might have good specials.

My advice is the same whether in good economic times or bad.

    1. Pay off you debts, especially credit cards (congrats!)

    2. Have an emergency fund equal to six months to one year of your expenses

    3. Put 15% of you income away for retirement (401(k), 403(b), IRA, Roth IRA).

4.Consider paying down your mortgage or funding an investment account.

If you have accomplished 1,2, & 3 then any money you put towards paying off you mortgage has just "earned" the equivalent of the amount of interest on your mortgage. If you can make more interest in a safe investment, then invest. But right now interest rates are down, so it makes more sense for me, personally, to pay down my mortgage. That way I am earning 5% on my extra money instead of 3 or 4% on CDs or in a Money Market account.

Right now I am investing in my Money Market account, I also put my tax returns in a 3 month CD. The main thing I am focused on during the recession is putting as much cash away as possible. Once I see a glimmer of hope in the real estate world (such as new home sales going up) I will look at putting money back in the stock market.

Pay down your mortgage and payoff your cars, etc... Congratulations on no credit card debt! That's the biggest solution. Give to the poor and trust God for your provision
