Help with Windows XP Home Workgroup?

I have two computers that I am trying to connect through a workgroup. The first computer is connected directly to my Linksys router. The second computer is connected to a Linksys USB Wireless Receiver. They are both set to the MSHOME workgroup. On the first computer I can see icons for both computers, but when I double click on the icon for the second computer it pops up the message "\\Family-desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The Network path was not found."

I have file and printer sharing permissions set to allow, and have turned off both Windows Firewalls. I have been trying to get this to work for a while, and am getting a little tired of it. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

    Hi Woden501:

consider what cyberdoc, Abc D, and mi deng suggested you above...if that still doesn't work, try doing this on BOTH computers:

-go to Start > Settings > Network Connections

-right click the Local Area Connection icon (or the Wireless Newtork Connection icon)

    -click on Properties

    -click Install

-select Protocol, and then click Add

    -select NWLinkIPX/SPX/Netbios Compatible Transport Protocol...

    -click Ok

    -close all windows

    -restart the computer

Now you can try clicking the second computer icon again and entering the respective password.

If it still doesn't work, maybe you should go to the router's web-based configuration tool (open a web browser and go to 192.168.1.1). Once there, you can try reconfiguring your linksys router as a "Router" and not as an "Access point" or viceversa.

    Hope this helps you :)

You need to configure/set file transfers for BOTH computers. It's very simple with XP. Just right click any folder > sharing and security...> check share this folder on the network. Complete the wizard IF one pops up. I can't stress this enough, you need to do this at least once for BOTH computers.

Often times you need to unplug the router and modem for a minute and plug them back in just for things to update or correct itself. This happens every so often(about once every 3 - 4 weeks) after everything is setup and working.

Another thing is I have seen firewalls block this transfer. In my experience, I had to manually set the trust control for norton 360 and macafee firewalls. I know some other ones I didn't (like NIS), but you should definately check this step out. Check to make sure your antivirus isn't bundled with a firewall, they often are.

One more thing, when you open "my network places", you'll see a bunch of shared folders under "the internet". Don't use these links, they are almost never ever updated. On the the left plane, click on "view workgroup computers" then find the computer and its shared folder that way. If you don't want to do this every time, just right click the share and map network drive.

Lovely. This is one of microsofts big lovely ones. Workgroups are always a pain. You could modify the shared folder, and add the user to the security permissions tab. But first, have you tried restarting both computers after they joined?

I find 9 times out of 10 if I have that problem, time fixes it, or you can do this:

right click on my computer, and select explore

Expand my network places->entire network->microsoft windows network

In there you should see the PCs, and get into them that way. Sometimes it works that way, I'm not really sure why windows is lame liek that.

Set an admin user id and password on both the computers and use it while connecting.

Blank ids and pwds don't work in networking environments.

flow to community places and run the community connection wizard. be sure that they the two have an identical Workgroup call and which you verify the alternative that asserts.. "activate report and printer sharing. in case you have firewall disable them temporally until you could configure it to enable printer/report sharing between the two desktops. permit me be conscious of if that helped.
