Gentle Leader or Harness?
i have a german shepherd/rottweiler mix and she makes walking difficult. She keeps jumping and pulling and is over hypered and i need some help walking her. The regular collar is not a good idea so i'm looking for something different. I've heard great things about the gentle leader but the harness (the one that goes under her body) seems more firm and easier to control the dog with. It's a heavy dog apprx. 70lbs so which one will work best for me?
thanx

Gentle Leader. If you want to be pulled around then use the harness. With that you are letting them use their WHOLE body weight to pull you compared to pulling from the neck w/ a collar. A gentle leader will let YOU be the one that controls the walks, it makes them pay attention to you. I've seen heavier dogs walk just fine w/ the gentle leader. Avoid the harness.

Actually gentle leader now makes a harness as well as a head collar. I would recommend the gentle leader harness over the head collar any day. I trained my dog with the head collar (it was before the gentle leader harness was available). However, she hated it and alot of dogs do. However, contrary to what people have stated about harnesses, the gentle leader harness works differently and is very effective. I'm a dog walker and several of my client's dogs are being trained with it and it is great. Several of the trainers I know also use and recommend it. You should be able to research it online or check it out at any pet store. Best of luck to you!

Actually if those two collars are my choices, Gentle Leader hands down. The dog absolutely cannot pull, jump, or any other thing, but they CAN with a harness. Look at it this way, the dog goes where his head leads. Trust me on this try it, you'll be amazed the immediate control the head collar gives you. One word of caution however. Be sure to fit it properly. The part around the nose should allow the dog to open it's mouth, eat and drink easily. HTH
** Why did Cagney get a thumbs down? I am a short 97 pound woman and own and train Rottweilers and I don't use a Gentle Leader, but I did obedience train. If you think a 70 pound dog is a lot to handle, try being my size with a 100+ pound dog that's nothing but muscle. Obedience training works wonders! Cagney I gave you a thumbs up, that answer was perfectly correct

All the no-jump harnesses do is provide a strange feeling.. which some dogs overcome. the gentle leader or Halti head collar actually stops pulling, but I would recommend a training class for both of you, where you can learn to be the alpha, and how to train your dog. You do not want a large, powerful breed to get the upper hand. That is when mistakes occur, and someone gets hurt. I can walk my 2 pit bulls and my Great dane on a simple, thin, slip lead (all at the same time.). They follow, I lead. Once your dog sees you as the leader, a lot of problems will mysteriously "vanish"

definitely the gentle leader. the way it actually works is when the dog goes to pull you, the head will be turned in the opposite direction which is not the effect that they desired. after a few times of this they realize that pulling on turns them around and give in. it competely takes away all control that they have. i have never seen a dog go into somersaults to try and get out of one so havent had that problem personally. the harness gives a larger dog much more control than you want them to have as instead of just using their neck to be able to pull you they are able to out their entire weight into the harness and quickly overpower you. harnesses are great for smaller dogs but not so much for a larger dog. good luck hope this helps

Gentle Leader, if used correctly. Make sure to fit snugly. Read instructions carefully to make sure it's the proper fit.
With a harness, a dog is able to pull much harder.
Another option is the Easy Walk. It looks like a harness, but it doesn't allow the dog to use a full range of motion.

am a vet nurse with 2 big rottweilers and I can honestly reccommend whats called a Canny Collar. At work we have alot of positve feedback about them they are great for small dogs as well as big dogs. Gentle Leaders or Halti's are ok but they take alot longer for the dog to adjust to than with the Canny Collar. It works by putting a small amount of pressure on the nose that helps to slow them down, whereas the gentle leaders pull their head to one side which they absolutely hate and start doing sommersaults to get them off. Here is a website about them because they will be able to explain how they work better than I can. All I can say I have never been so happy about a pet product as I have with this invention...Just wish I had thought of making it first! http://www.cannyco.com/

Gentle leader every time!! A Harness will only allow her to pull harder. The Gentle Leader in most cases is like a miracle. Harnesses are only good for little dogs and even then it doesn't stop them pulling it just stops them choking themselves. Good luck and happy walking!

no no no no no harness. harnesses were made for pulling or tracking. all it will do is encourage your dog to pull more. plus you'll have less control. this is not a dog you can control on a harness. it makes my crazy to see these big uncontrolable dogs on a harness.
the gentle leader will work just as well as a collar and leash. what you need to do is train your dog how to walk on a leash. the best way to control this issue is training. if your dog knows not to pull because you won't let them and have trained them to do so that's what is going to work. find an obedience class and learn how to train your dog not to pull and how to heel on a leash.
there's no quick fix to lack of training. it's going to take time and effort on your part and not a quick trip to the petstore.

We went to puppy school for our dogs, which are preetty heavy. The lady there suggested the gentle leader and we bought two and they worked. The first couple tiems there were scared when they came on but they got used tot hem. At first they borrowed and tried to get them off but now they know to behave.
