Your email address is not important overall, but the part that would matter at all is the username, not the host. Make sure your email is something simple and profession, like "jane.doe@email.com". Although a silly email most likely will not cost you a job, it is not beyond the realm of possibility. Don't be cutesy, vulgar, or otherwise inappropriate. I can think of one example in particular where a hiring manager would not interview a candidate because their email address was an offensive phrase in Spanish, so don't think you can get away with stuff by hiding behind a foreign language either.

I would also suggest having an email address dedicated specifically to your job search and keep personal correspondence separate. One reason for this is that it would prevent potential employers from searching sites like MySpace where they could see personal information you may not what them to know about.

I agree with an earlier response about the limitations on Hotmail. I also experienced the most problems with file sizes and overzealous spam filters on Hotmail, which can prevent you from receiving important correspondence from an employer.

Well, a free email host never looks as professional as a dedicated domain. It is really a small investment in something as important as a resume. You invested in good quality bond paper I hope. Now as to your question, I never differentiated between the free e-mail host when I was reading resumes. If it's going to be a free service, go with whatever.

    It doesn't really matter.

The one that is closest to your name is probably the best. Why? Because it's easiest to remember. If you are too late setting up an email account that you can't get one of your name, it shows a lack of foresight and/or planning. If you can't think of something clever and memorable, it shows a lack of creativity.

Will this make or break you as a potential candidate? Not in my book. There are too few professionals with talent and drive these days. BUT, if I was in a dead-heat tie, the things I pointed out above COULD make a difference.

There are so many email hosts that I don't think job recruiters and hr personnel pay much attention. What really matters are your skills and experience. Just make sure you email address works in case they try to contact you that way. Also, use an address that is some variation of your. Stay away from nicknames or anything vulgar.

It makes little difference to most, however I was once directed by an agency to get a Yahoo Account because of the file size limitations of Hotmail.

I do not know it these limitations still exist, but they were sending me papers to fill out and return and the files where to big for hotmail to handle.

I would use the yahoo/aol/gmail ones. Also, it would be great if you had some form of your name in the email addy....as opposed to sexygirl@yahoo.com or quirkysquirrel@gmail.com you know. Something like john.smith@yahoo.com is more professional.

I honestly don't think one look better than the other, as long as you keep lastnamefirstname portion. I've screen some resumes and the only time email addresses standout negatively is when the first portion is something like, sexybear143.

Yahoo and gmail appear more professional than any others. However, as long as you don't use silly names and numbers (ie. sexybaby23) the email host you use shouldn't be a problem.

Gmail is most respected provider by people who hire. You'll notice that people who are in hiring positions at corporations have as their personal email provider gmail by a wide margin.

Doesnt matter. As long as it's not something like cumhereanddome @yahoo.com
