Pagan is an umbrella term that is used to describe a myriad of different spiritual practices that primarily focus on nature. There could be a pagan couple who have decided to that having an open marriage is right for them. There are others who do not choose that path. One does not require the other.

Magical Sex practices were more common in the 60's (and in some instances not performed by serious spiritualist but rather some "horny brat kid looking to get his rocks off") but is not common now with what we know about AIDS, however there are some who maintain the knowledge of those practices so they can be passed down to future generations.

So yes there are closed marriages amongst pagans, and divorce, and cheating, and faithful couples, and anything else you will naturally find in any other religion.

No, not all Pagans believe that way. I am one who doesn't. I'm very monogamous.

There are poly Pagans but that is not even close to the majority.

Yes it's a myth in the fact that all Pagans don't have poly relationships. I'm getting the feeling that is what you've heard about. There are rituals in some groups that do involve sex. I would say most have moved away from that and perform the ritual using a metaphor for sex. There are also groups that are involved in sacred sexuality. Sex isn't done for the orgasm, it's much more involved.

I hope this clears up some of the question for you.

First ... Pagan is not "a" religion.

Paganism is a group of religions with about the only thing in common is a rejection of Christianity. (and even that's debatable in some circles)

Second, Paganism does not enforce any specific type of marriage ... that's up to the laws of the land, and the people involved.

A marriage though, is typically between two people. Christians even experiment with open marriages (at least some of them). Mormons are Christians and for a time (and some sects still do) accept polygamy.

What you are hearing is Christian attitudes about Paganism. Most Pagans don't have the hangups over sex that most Christians do. Some don't mind sexual experimentation. Christians have taken this and twisted it to try to show that all pagans are promiscuous. It's simply not the truth.

Pagan marriages are just the same as any other faith's marriage; open, closed that is a personal choice for the two involved.

Some, actually very few pagans engage in the raising of power for a ritual by using sex, usually with their marriage partner.

There is a ritual that is done involving the Maiden and the Great Horned One, but that is usually more of a symbolic joining, not a physical one.

answer: I'm having a serious problem believing this question is legitimate.

No, it's not true. There are some pagans that have an open marriage, just like there are non-practicing Christians that do as well. There is no "pagan" community like you're describing. You make it sound like a gated community. We don't put out flyers announcing where the next orgy is to alert all the pagans in the community. Dude, I don't even want to have coffee with some of them! Most pagans and heathens I know have traditional/closed marriages.

Go cruise www.witchvox.com and begin your education.

What you're asking is tired old propaganda from the Religious Right from the 1970s and 1980s.

Pagan is not a religion, it is a series of different beliefs under one term. "Open marriages" are probably more common among Christian swingers than pagans. If there are sects like that I would guess they were organized by the Fluffy Bunny types who make their own rules and get their kicks where they can and they are not pagans who are true "nature worshipers".

I have been practicing for 41 years, I know a lot of pagans, and not one has an open marriage, they all enjoy closed marriages.

If you really did hear that, someone is either grossly uneducated or pulling your leg.

Pagan refers to a group of religions, it is not one religion. I have never heard of any Pagan religion that practices such a thing. There are people that have open marriages, but it's not like your description. The majority of Pagans I know practice monogamy (myself included).

Paganism is a term which convers many different bliefs. Where you got that bunk about marriages is beyond me. If you are talking "swingers" (ie married people who swap partners for sexual pleasure) that is the choice of people and has nothing to do with religion. I have read where all religions do that including Christians!

there are many pagan religions and you havnt stated wich one you are speaking about but in my particular form of paganism we do not do such things my wife and i have been married and faithful to each other for 22 years as of may 3rd and there is no need to have sex during ritual its more about attuning yourself with the gods and godesses of your path I will say that there is nothing against sex as there is in christian religions its more a matter of choice sex is a part of nature and many pagan religions are nature based

I heard about a pagan society like this. Not so much prostitution, but one that promotes fertility and unity at the same time. I would guess it started in the Middle East, and encountered one of the monotheistic religions, which eventually lead to the branching of Mormonism in the New World (polygamy is not a new concept as is mistaken with Brigham Young).
