Buying Box sets of DVD movies on E.Bay.com is no problem: how do you get round Customs tax on U.K.import.?

There must be dozens of people in the same predicament as I find myself in.

Being a senior citizen: who loves the nostalgia of movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. and my catergory being Musicals of the 1940 era.

On International sites: especially America, many Sellers both Studio & individual distributors, offer numerous Box sets of the

Films I would love to add to my collection.

I regularly purchase items from America but I confine my orders to come into a price bracket: not exceeding £17.00.

which is approx $34.00.

Any goods bought above these prices are always hammered by the Customs when they arrive at the PostOffice sorting offices in London: and when your friendly Postman knocks at your door, with such goods, you have to pay him: or their confiscated.

I fell foul of this only once: and had to hand over another £ 6.00

to get some long awaited for DVDs.

I have just seen a few Box sets at $50.00 = £ 25. that are

being released in April films from MGM any suggestions

Whether you get charged import tax depends on who you buy from.

Anything sent via UPS -always- gets inspected by customs and you get charged tax.

Anything sent by normal post and declared as a "gift" usually escapes import tax.

    Try

    http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/

Their P&P is free and I've never been caught for duty and I've bought hundreds of videos/dvds off them, and I've never limited my orders to price.

If the package is marked as a gift then it should be exempt of import tax because tax can only be charged on commercial goods.

I think that is whole sites like Play.com get around customs and I've had packages sent from the US before (via Ebay purchase) that have been marked as a gift and I've not had to pay tax.

I've bought loads of items from Amazon.com and I've only been hit with the customs charge twice. I balance it with the savings I'm making and I've still come out on top. Customs only does random checks - and it's not HMRC that charges you £6 it's the sorting office. HMRC only charges you the VAT due which is fair enough.

'Proper' stores can't mark your item as a gift as if they're caught it's fraud.

But eBay sellers usually do mark their stuff a gifts.

So what your asking for is advice on how to evade paying duty and tax?

    That is illegal.

I'll bet you still want to be able to access the NHS services and get your state pension though don't you?

Well it ain't free, taxes pay for it.

The suggestion of marking them as gifts is bollox
