Conservatives/Neo-cons: Why are you Conservative?

I'm looking to understand, not to mock or put down. What is it that made you choose to associate yourself or identify yourself with this particular ideology? I'm looking for answers of the type "I believe..." or "I think..."

So Libs, please hold your "cuz I'm an idjit" type comments.

Update:

The thing - Thank you for your answer. I will not argue any point that you (or anyone) seriously makes. As I said, I'm trying to understand, not to put down or mock.

For everyone else, (say, Canada is...), if you are not a Conservative, please skip the stupid comments.

Update 2:

HillDog: My reality of what conservatism is does not play a part on this question. Nor does my own political orientation. I'm asking those who identify themselves as Conservatives what *their* reasons are for adopting that position or belief.

What is Conservatism? It’s not a political philosophy; its a life philosophy. Conservatives believe that each individual is unique. We believe that each individual is responsible for his development. We believe that family is the best support group for individuals. And we believe that private institutions like churches and synagogues, charities, private enterprises and so forth are best support group for families.

Conservatives believe, as did the Founders of the Declaration of Independence, that God is Supreme-not the government. Conservatives believe that God has given us natural rights, not the government.

Conservatives believe that a powerful centralized government such as ours, putting aside national security for the moment, threatens the individual, the family and private institutions. A powerful centralized government seeks uniformity and absolute compliance; it smothers individuality, family and religion. A centralized government seeks to play the role of God, through its abuse of laws and regulations, and the confiscation of redistribution of wealth.

Conservatives believe in the Constitution. We believe in Representative government as opposed to a judicial oligarchy or government by bureaucracy.

Conservatives believe in free political speech and the free exercise of religion. We believe in the right to bear arms. We believe in due process rights for American citizens and not terrorists. We believe in Federalism, the dispersing of power among the states. We believe in a colorblind society. We believe in low taxes and strictly limited spending. We believe in individual opportunity and merit.

Conservatives respect the private property and wealth of our fellow citizens. Just as its wrong for any of us to steal from our neighbors, its equally wrong to elect politicians who steal from our neighbors on our so-called behalf.

Conservatives believe in the greatness of the American people; their compassion; their honor; their inventiveness; their judgment. We believe that but for America, the world would be a dark, bloodthirsty, regressive place where tyranny would rule and humanity would suffer an unimaginable fate.

I am a Conservative for many reasons. The basis being:

    1. I'd rather rely on myself then on the Federal government to take care of me.

    2. I believe in having lower taxes all around, not higher taxes. Because by doing so, you are taking money away from a lot of honest hard working people.

    3. I know that a child in the womb isn't going to be anything other then a child, and that they have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness just like anyone else. And it is not their fault that their mother was irresponsible in her doings (which is more often the case then not).

    4. I believe in the individual, not the group that many liberals seem to think is more important. If not for the individual, society would never have progressed.

    5. I am against Affirmative Action because it is nothing more then a handout. If people want to be treated as equals, okay then, but they shouldn't be using Affirmative then.

    The list goes on.

Conservatives believe everyone should be given an opportunity to stand on their own two feet...equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome. What I earn is mine, not the government's. Government should be small and do a limited amount, not an international conglomerate that runs the economy. That's a start.

Now don't bother saying, "But that's not what the Republican party stands for" because I am well aware that John McCain is a RINO and the Republican Party is not truly conservative anymore...I am just answering the question you posed.

Conservatism is an ideal that puts personal responsibility and accountability first. It promotes capitalism and is the basis for the "American Dream". Conservatives are against big government intrusion into our daily lives.

In regards to Canada's statement. Obviously you don't know the first thing about the makeup of Conservatism. Nazis and fascist are liberal parties who believe in government control of everything.

When I turned 18, I picked a political party. I looked at my choices, and I chose Republican. What attracted me to them was their relationship with big business, it seemed logical and sound, business is what makes a country strong, it is what supplies a country with what it needs, and is a measure of how successful a country was. When I was 18, I foresaw myself becoming involved with business by establishing a career, and that is a goal I am on the way to achieving.

The Democratic party was not attractive to me, it seems that while their message and purpose is good, their overall methods are not. As a whole they are disorganized, and it largely seems that they just throw money at problems or do simple things to please people in order to get any share of power. I also highly disagree with how state and local Democrats run their governments, by levying unrealistic taxes at citizens and generally being very shady.

I am conservative because of experience. I am a senior citizen, retired, fed up to the eyebrows with paying taxes and watching the money get wasted.

I am in favor of free enterprise. I am in favor of less government involvement in anything and everything. I am in favor of less government spending.

I am opposed to social programs of all kinds, which are run by government bureaucracies.

We have equal opportunity in the US, and that's all government owes us...the chance to make the best of our lives, by our own initiatives.

I believe that every power given to the government is a power taken from the people and is a taking of my right to make decisions for myself. I believe that the unintended consequences of each law and regulation are often greater than the problems they solve. I believe that most social programs incentivize the behavior they are trying to cure. I believe that governmental power should reside in local governments where politicians are most accountable to the people. I believe that special interests run our government and the best way to have government do the people's work is to let people do the work. I believe that outcomes in a free society are never equal and the only way to equalize out comes is to pull everyone down since it is not possible to lift everyone up unless everyone works at lifting themselves up. I believe that redistribution of wealth most often results in perpetuating the causes of poverty. I believe that the government will always outspend the revenue we give them. I believe that parochial interests will always result in pork and a misallocation of resources. I believe that the federalizing of private enterprises will always create over-consumption and rationing.

I believe that there is evil in the world and that it cannot be combatted by compassion. I believe that our enemies correctly see our moral relativism as a weakness to be exploited. I believe that people seek to be free and seek opportunity to better themselves when left to their own devices. I believe that peace comes from strength. I believe that using our military force to project our ideals through the world is the only way to combat the evil that seeks to keep people poor, desparate and angry.

    I hope that helps.

    Because:

I think working each day for a living is a good thing, not aspire to being on welfare.

I think it is my right to keep the money I earn and not share it with those who are too lazy to work. ( but to share with all those who cant legit. work )

I think it is wrong to yank a child from a womb as a form of birth control.

I do believe that it is wrong to burn the flag of the nation that has kept me free and safe.

I think it is wrong to open our borders and let anyone come in and further swell our welfare system.

I believe IT DOES NOT TAKE A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD !!! It simply takes a loving mother and father. I am sorry that Chelsea Clinton did not have that.

US GOVT.... stay away from my kid!

Jeez! My fingers will bleed on the keyboard b4 I run out of reasons!

Simply put, i believe that people ought to support themselves, and make their own way, and not rely on handouts from the government. I do not advocate deviant lifestyle choices, welfare states, entitlements, and killing the unborn, just for starters.
