Sister having a problem with her cat?

My sister has been having a problem with her cat. She and her boyfriend live in an apartment, and the cat sleeps in their room with them at night. He gets up really early, though, and starts meowing, so they put him outside and shut the door. Problem is, now the cat has started pooping in the hall after they lock him out (he has access to a litter box in their spare room), and I've heard this is a difficult problem to stop. Anyone else experienced this and how do they deal with it? They've already decided to see a vet about it.

cats go outside their boxes if they're dirty, or if mr kitty is in a bad mood about being locked out of the bedroom!!! tell them to try leaving the door open, but getting a spray bottle to keep by the nightstand....even a water gun will do.......when the meows and whines start in the early am, grab the bottle and squirt em!!!

Does the cat use the bathroom in the floor all the time or just after being locked out of the bedroom? If he only does it after being locked out, it is definitely a behavior issue. When my cat meows at me for no reason it is usually because she is lonely/bored and wants some attention. If this is the case and the cat is being ignored when he wants attention, this is the ultimate sign of frustration. Try getting the cat something to occupy its attention when it is by itself. Buy it some interactive toys, leave the TV on in another room, possibly get it a play mate (another cat). If the cat is doing this all the time I would say that there is something wrong with his litter box. Try keeping it as clean as possible or switching litters. Some cats won't use certain kinds of litter. Also, make sure to clean up after the cat as much as possible. If a cat can smell urine or feces in a spot where he once went, they will continue to go there because they think its ok.

The root of the problem is the waking up early. You can get around that with making kitty run around until you go to bed, and he'll most likely sleep through the night - mine did.
