bosox fans: why does manny ramirez always sit and admire his hits?

i know, he's the best 2 strike hitter, clutch, blah, blah, blah....

but why does he always hesitate at the plate and look like he just went yard on a single that should/could have been a double?

i'm not a sox fan (or even a yanks fan), but even though he's clearly a badass i'd be pissed at the lack of hustle.

do bo sox fans ever get annoyed? if it were varitek or maybe j.d. would they be vilified? i'm not a troll, this is actually a serious question and i was wondering what the locals had to say about it, or if they've even noticed it.

and please, no "manny being manny" replies.

Man....if you could hit the ball like Manny you would admire your work too. You are right...Manny is one "bad" man. In regards to him posing and watching his hits ("Manny admiring Manny")....trust me, I am a die hard Sawx fan and it never gets old. Manny looks so finnesse at the plate. For any other player to do it (JD Drew or Varitek) it would just look ridiculous. Plus, I think it fits Manny's personality. He is just a laid back, nothing-too-serious kind of guy. He takes that approach with him at the plate. I don't get annoyed with anything Manny does. This includes the routes he takes to field some of the balls hit to him, going into the Green Monster during innings, the finger points, the hair, the baggy uniform, and posing at all his hits. NO matter what he does...I will be a fan of his. When he gives his Hall of Fame speech someday, I will be there anticipating one of the funniest speeches ever given in Cooperstown.

Manny's just the guy who gets on the highlight reels for watching but SEVERAL other players do the same thing. It's just a matter of his style, you're going to get huge numbers out of him but you'll also have a few should-be-doubles turn into singles. Now, the Sox were willing to put up with that to get the production out of him.

It also gets overplayed quite a bit because watching Manny actually hustle isn't as good for ESPN as the admiration is. on a ground ball or gap shot Manny's as quick to first base as most Left Fielders in the game. He'll take his time if he thinks it's gone or he knows it will be a single.

I am more annoyed by these questions...he hustles more often than not but because the media emphasizes the "Manny being Manny" thing and that he is lazy, many people believe that is the case...while he does admire shots and sometimes doesn't hustle down the line, more often than not he does hustle and he plays really good defense as well...so no, I don't get annoyed when he admires a home run...I will admit I do get a little annoyed if it isn't a "sure thing" home run and it turns out to stay in the yard but I will take those few times.

A lot of players get criticized of this (Manny's cousin Aramis on the Cubs does it a lot too) but you know, I'd probably do it too. I appreciate players like Fukudome that are halfway out of the box as they hit and that's crucial but I can put up with the self appreciation of big hitters too. Or maybe they don't do it on purpose, maybe it actually is awe-inspiring every time they do it.

He is classless. Good player but classless. If manny played for any other team (he would have to shower) and did that red sox fans would be booing him. His showboating is disgusting. I am surprised he doesnt' get hit with more balls. But I suppose thats what you get when you buy a team like the red sox (and yankees) do.

If Jeter, A-rod, Griffy, or Gurrerro did that 9 out of 10 red sox fans would tell you they are classless.

I'm not particularly a Sox fan, but I know a great swing when I see one. Manny's got one of the best swings of all time IMO.

Honestly, if I had a swing like Manny has, I'd probably sit back and admire my handy-work too.

I dont know why he does it maybe e is mezmerized by it he does it playing t he field too he will stare at a ball for a few seconds before making a move maybe just takes him a moment to clue in as to what is going on around him.

It's just the way Manny is. I guess, but if A-Rod, Jeter or any other Yankee player were to do that, many Boston fans would say it is arrogant & cocky

not a BoSox fan, either...but it doesn't bother me that much when I see a batter taking virtual pictures of his long fly ball before making his trot....I remember when Chili Davis and Reggie Jackson did their little slow trots, and they would occasionally get the brushback next time they were at-bat. Both rituals are part of the game.
