Where does government surveillance go too far?

I was initially all for the Patriot Act and its intentions, but now I disagree with most governmental surveillance. I think that we are walking down a slippery slope when the government sets up CCTVs, or Closed Circuit Televisions, in order to monitor individual behavior. I understand the threat terrorism has to us here in America, but where do we draw the line? Where do we say enough is enough? In London, there is one CCTV for every 14 people. That is a statistic that I don't want here in America. So when does the CCTV become a Telescreen from George Orwell's 1984? Or has it already with things like Red Light Cameras and Speed Surveillance Monitors among other things?

Update:

Let me clarify a couple of things.

1st. I support businesses that set up CCTVs, I am just against the government using the systems. It is not that I am trying to hide anything, it is simply a question of where do we draw the line? The fact is that CCTVs have been set up in several parts of America to watch for individual behavior ("Welcome to the Panopticon" Popular Mechanics 1/08), and since large amounts of data can be stored cheaply now, there is no limit to what the government can watch.

Can you name one CCTV system in the US that is intended to monitor individual people?

The purpose of red light cameras is to generate revenue for the city via increased traffic fines. (This is one reason I support the idea that all traffic fines have to be placed in highway and road trust funds.)

BTW: the reason private companies are installing CCTV is 1) decreased costs, 2) decreased liability risk due to faster detection of problems, and 3) greater deterrence of undesirable behavior.

New world order - daddy bush said. The eye in the sky can pinpoint anything. I believe that has gone overboard. Instead of infringing on our rights as American's ---- why don't they stop people at the border and not let them in - if they don't met certain criteria? I'm ready to go live in a remote cave somewhere! I'm tired of the King that rules us and that is what he thinks and we have let him have to much power. I just hope these next few years will be better. I use to flip off those stop light camera's everywhere I see them, now I see them and just feel down right sad!

What are you afraid of? If you have nothing to hide then this wouldn't be a problem. I'm all for it.
