Do you think this helps show why pro-gun advocates rely on firearms to protect their families?
Go to www.familywatchdog.us and put in your zip code or city or state or address and look at how many registered sex offenders are in your area.
Even in the rural part of the country I am in I have 23 of them within a 3 mile radius!!!
Granted that all of their crimes vary in degree and nature, but nonetheless having two convicted rapist and a man that has three counts of forced sodomy on a child under the age of 16 living within 3 miles of my home really gets me apprehensive!
I live in a good, quite and rural area too!
I actually use the Idaho State Patrol's sex offender map because it is more user friendly and really pinpoints thing accurately, but the familywatchdog.us is a generic, easily found site. I would recommend trying to find your own states site to see what they have too.
My point is that I really hope that this may illustrate the importance of having something in your home that is able to stop a full grown and very aggressive man.
This is just registered sex offenders. This doesn't include repeat burglars/home intruders, drug offenders, murderers or assault and battery convicts to name a few other folks that put your family into danger.
I just have a hard time thinking that pepper spray or a small tazer will protect my family as effectively as a firearm would.
When you take in account that even a firearm such as a .38 special has a hard time stopping an aggressive attacker you have to wonder HOW a chemical spray that you HAVE to get into their eyes will stop them or save you.
With a bat, knife, tazer (DON'T TAZE ME BRO!) or even a golf club you have to get too close to your attacker. You want to stay as far away from the intruder as possible.
Understand that you also need to avoid deadly force at all cost. A gun will intimidate an intruder much faster than any of the aforementioned close quarters weapons. This will give you a better chance at a fleeing intruder!
Also, to the gun grabbers, have you ever heard the saying- never take a knife to a gun fight?
If you have a home defense firearm you can rest assured that no matter what that intruder has as a weapon for his attack you will have an equal opportunity or a much higher opportunity at overpowering his attack.
I.E. If you have pepper spray and he has a handgun.....well good luck. If he has a hangun and you have a shotgun, things balance out a lot better!
So, you say that is what the police is for. As a general rule it takes 4 to 8 minutes for a GOOD response time. IF you even get the chance to dial that 911 call that intruder can do a LOT of damage to you and your family before the cops round the corner and hit your driveway. If you don't get the 911 call you are a sheep lying under your bed waiting for the slaughter. Is that the way you want to die? Without a fight even, you just want to roll over and die without a fight?
I don't understand that logic or mind-set!

This is one reason why we always need to stand firm on our RIGHT to "Keep and Bear Arms" and assure that RIGHT is never infringed upon.

all good points, but we did not have the right to bear arms for hunting and burglars. We have that particular constitutional right in order to overthrow govt. should it become too abusive. Now that our govt. is becoming more controlling and the public in general more apathetic, they want to sell us a bill of goods that makes it seem like hunting is blazze, so we don't need guns for that and guns are dangerous because they kill people. I have NEVER seen a gun grow little gun arms and legs and use itself against someone. People that don't know what they are doing with guns are dangerous and people that do know what they are doing with guns can be should the situation arise where protection is needed. Personally, I would like to reserve the right to shoot anyone who thinks they are going to break in my house or car or try to attack me. It would also come in handy if there were another revolution and someone was trying to steal food out of my garden (since most people do not farm anymore and many would starve if they had to hang up their cell phones or put aside there cappuccino long enough to actually do something about the chaos). It would be hilarious to say I told you so to all the crazy's out there who want us to give up our right to bear arms if we had to form militias for some reason and try to make a defense against an enemy with pitchforks (ooops, we don't farm anymore) ok, just regualr forks as we get shot down by the hundreds. Anyone that doesn't think any of this is a possibility is ridiculous and hasn't learned from history. Ofcourse I could be wrong. I guess the larger part of america could just keep sitting on it's lazy a** and let things go until we have no rights left. Oh, wait, that is what's already happening. So don't let govt. confuse the issue. By the way, I'll be surprised if we are still "allowed" to hunt in twenty years

Good question. Fortunately the small town near me with about 2,000 people has only 3. The data base you gave shows nothing for that town. And another shows 2, but I know there is 3 as some of my friends are law enforcement.
For those of you in Alaska here is a good link;
http://www.city-data.com/so/Alaska.html
http://www.dps.state.ak.us/sorweb/Sorweb.aspx
As far a response time where I live, we are talking about an hour for law enforcement to get here. Lots can happen in an hour! Now the fact is there is FEW people near me and fewer yet that even come here. So the odds are very small for some nut job to give us a problem.
But to show that even in the small quiet towns of South East Alaska can have a nut case kill people, read this story;
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/04/02/alaska.stabbin...
The problem there was, although many had guns, none thought this sort of thing would ever happen. So no one was ready to stop this killer.
NEVER assume it won’t happen to you! Be ready, be armed, and know how to react to such things.
If some screwball tries to hurt me or mine, the wife and I will respond with deadly force, if need be. That is unless our dogs eat him first lol!

I don't understand it either.
I don't have any kids, so I never gave much thought to the sex predators, but there are home invasions every day. I know I will die someday, but I'd rather it not be on the whim of some turd, because he wanted no witnesses.
The thing about firearms that is hard to beat is that they are instant-effect, unlike pepper spray. They are long-distance, hands-off weapons, unlike clubs, bats, tire irons, etc., and they allow you to engage multiple targets quickly, or to reengage a missed target, unlike tasers.

We are lucky to have only 2 registered sex offenders within 15 miles of our property. I have made it a priority to meet them and determine their potential danger. I appreciate the work that family watch dog does in informing the public. I also am a believer in protecting my family by having guns available for protection.

I'm very rural, we are talking so far into the sticks they have to pipe in sunlight. My towns population is 900, and there are two within 10 miles. I know both of them but I had no idea they were on the list, creepy as hell. Thanks for bringing this up, I'm going to mad dog them two guys next time I see them in the store.

Thanks for the site. 3 within 10 miles. Good info to have!
You mentioned pepper spray-I've also heard it doesn't always work if the attacker is on the "go fast" drugs.
Glad we have better stopping power!
