Cats won't drink water when eating....?

I recently noticed that my two cats drink 6-8 oz of water a day when I feed them Merrick but they drink about 6-8 oz a week when I feed them Evo 95% wet food (beef flavor). What's up with that?

Update:

Both are wet foods. Evo doesn't have any liquid and Merrick has a lot. I would think they wouldn't drink as much with Merrick. How can Evo have a lot of water when it is 95% beef? Ok, beef has quite a bit of water. Is it just simply such a good food that it is mimicking nature more than the other one? I've read that cats in the wild get most of their water from their food, not from water sources.

The cat has a reputation to be a "small drinker". It is because he is able to concentrate his urine very much (average density: 1045 compared to 1015 in dog and man). But if the concentration of the urine is too high, there is a higher risk of crystals precipitation and urinary stones formation. Then, the cat must be encouraged to drink. The cat has got 3 available sources of water: water from the food, drinking water, and the water produced when carbohydrates, proteins and fats are used. This "metabolic water" represents only 10-15 % of the total required water. When a cat is fed wet food, (cans or fresh meat or fish), way more than his water requirement is met with the water content of his diet. In these conditions, he does not drink or very little. On the contrary, when fed dryfood, he has to drink to cover almost 100 % of his water requirement.

The cat is a "finicky drinker". He is very sensitive to the cleanliness and to the taste of the water. To encourage him to drink, it is advised to let him have a free access to water, to serve it in a clean bowl in glass, earthenware or stainless steel (avoid plastic materials that fix odors), and to renew it twice a day. The ideal temperature would set between 5 and 18°C.

If Merrick is a drier food than Evo, it's simply because they're getting their water intake from the wet food, so they don't need to drink as much water.

Don't allow puss close the tap. He is also consuming too rapid. There would be some thing approximately the tap now not agreeing with him. If your cat continues throwing up whilst now not making use of the tap, I might get a moment opinion to be certain he does now not have whatever incorrect. I have had cats throw up earlier than, repeatedly, it's nerves, fur balls, in general not anything severe. But if it is going on too lengthy I feel a assess up is clever and might be a complement to the nutrition in case he's loosing vitamins and minerals from throwing up.

    That's absolutely natural .

They need some certain amount of water daily , depending on their age and general condition . if they consume wet food regularly they receive the majority of that need-water from that food , so they happen not to drink water directly as frequent . remember , about 85 percent of wet food is literally water !

But in the case case they consume dry food they need to drink much more , simply because only less than 10 percent of dry food is water . That's all . Don't worry they are going great .

    Hope it helps !

My poor little kitty is just being treated for a urine infection. I was advised not to give her any dry food for 8 weeks. (She always had dry available, but also fed wet food twice a day). If you are concerned that your cats aren't drinking enough, then try what I was advised to do - add boiling water to the wet food and mix it in so it takes on the flavour of the gravy/jelly. I have started doing this so that mine gets more moisture.

I had my cat for over 10 years and she was only fed moist food. I asked the same question to the pet store and the vet and as long as they're eating moist food, water is already in it. (Strange example but in nature gorillas don't drink ANY water because there is enough in the foods<fruits & veggies> that they eat. Think about how much water is in a head of iceberg lettuce or celery! They eat about 8lbs of food!!)

Anyway, Always leave water available and your cats will drink if they needs to. If you're really concerned, look for signs of dehydration (pull the scruff up a little it should bounce back quickly) If you are still concerned take them to them to the vet for a check up.

You could also feed them half moist & half dry. Dry food does help to reduce plaque on your pets teeth, but the nutrients are usually higher in canned.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

the difference between wet and dry food. Just like with humans, eat something that is dry, you'll drink more, eat something that is more wet and you won't drink as much.

If they are getting alot of moisture out of their food they will not drink as much water.
