When I was young I lived in a predominately black, poor, gang ridden area. I had a wonderful teacher who treated all her students like family. We had a field trip every week that year(which isn't common at any school), sometimes twice a week, and she took us to operas, plays, cutural exibits, and she even took us to her home for a jewish celebration. She opened my eyes to a whole new world and I truly appreciate it because I may have never known about a world other then the one I was living in my own city. I have become a better person because of it.

Yes -- between living in the US versus Peru. I moved to Peru over two years ago and was actually pleasantly surprised at all the new culture and experiences before me. When I went back to the US a year later, however, it hit me very hard how much my life had changed. Not only was I speaking English again (after having spoken only Spanish for so long), but also the food was different and just life in general. From having lived in a large city (Lima) and then back to rural Georgia was a little "shocking".
What I missed the most about Peru, though, was the outlook on life -- much more relaxed and family-oriented. While I love the US and still go to visit, I prefer living in Peru for now.

Yes, The first time was on my first trip overseas.
It was 1978 I was 23 and my husband and I were visiting his parents in communist Hungary for the first time since he escaped from there 7 years before.
At that time, almost no one spoke English in Hungary and his family did't for sure. His parents had just retired to a small farm about 45 min. from the city.
Everything was so strange from their food and living situation to how they washed their clothes. It was even harder since our son was only 2 years old and he would cry when they spoke Hungarian to him, he was afraid.
I thought I would never want to go there again but now I find myself living in Hungary 6 months per year and am thinking of staying here for my retirement years.
Strange how things change.

Florida. That is one surreal place. And I'm not talking about Disneyland either.
The place I grew up in, where my parents still live, in SE Michigan. Especially after living in the UK for several years. I never felt like I belonged there, now it feels like the foreign country. I've been more comfortable in places where I don't know the language.

I have traveled to different countries, but I have not experience culture shock, because I have an open mind and realize that people have their own way of doing things - there is no one correct way!
