I small used car with decent m.p.g.?

Question

We need another car to run around town in.
It must have 4 doors.  It can be very small, but I need good gas mileage.  Any suggestions would be great.  We have just decided to start looking, but I do not know where to start.  An older car will be fine.  

Also, if you suggest an older car, I would appreciate any additional info that would be helpful to know when looking.

Toyota first, then Honda by a close second. Swing by the library and check Consumer Reports for their ratings on makes and how they hold their value, also frequency of service/repair. Owner comments count for a great deal:  see Craigslist.org for local offerings of private sales, and deal hard- get a service record and proof of ownership  before sale. Remember insurance costs, generally small for econocars, shop around, rates can vary a lot.
