Can you over-stretch your neck? and How?

I recently had a cortisone shot from my neurologist for pinched nerves in my neck. I was pretified and almost canceled appt. It maybe helped a little.

I rescheduled an appt. and upon asking if another shot might helpp, (who didn't ask me a thing) said that I'm overstretching my neck. He said I have a short neck? (i have short everything)

I'm 55 - for years I've heard that slowing excersizing your neck around is a GOOD thing. My chiropractor gave me neck excercises to do?

I'm at my wits end. Please give me your opinions.

Update:

Thanks Raven, I appreciate your anwer but the problem was multiple pinched nerves in my neck. It created a number of muscle spasms.

Update 2:

I had cervical MRI before.

i think by saying "over stretch" your neck he means you pulled it. you cant make your neck longer by stretching it, so the initial length has nothing to do with stretching it too much...

get a new neurologist this guy sounds unprofessional. if youre in pain, he should do everything in his power to help you.

also there is this weird disease that effects peoples muscles, usually in the neck that makes them hyper tense (more than what your saying). so tense that they are permanently contorted so they face one way or another. the treatment for this is a lot of botox, shot right into the neck. because the muscles are over working the botox doesnt paralyze the neck, but relaxes it enough to work normally.

    Stretch My Neck

  • 1 decade ago

I have a habit of stretching my neck to pop it. I recently overstretched it and it was horrible. I did not get medical help but was fairly taken out by it for about a week. It's been 4 or 5 weeks now and it's finally better where I don't need pain meds every day.

I guess my opinion is that it will eventually heal but it takes a long time. The skin on my neck still hurts from this thing and the muscles are still tight.

    Good luck.

i dont think that you can over-stretch your neck...its probably just a pulled muscle or something...ask your doctor for an x-ray
