My cat has been cooing and making weird noises when she looks out the window...?

...Is she just trying to lure birds? Or could she be looking for a companion (She use to do this when we had another cat)? We leave the window in our bedroom open (it has a screen) during the day and there is a tree outside...so we thought she might just be trying to talk to the birds...but the noises have been getting stranger.

Does anyone else's cat(s) do this? Does anyone know what it is?

if the cat is spayed and being in heat isn't the issue, then i'd guess she's "chattering" at things outside the window.

this is what "chattering" looks like:

the way my vet boss explained it is that cats do it not because they are trying to lure the critter in or because they are frustrated at not being able to get at it, but they do it to bring other cats in the area to help with the prey. (cats are not quite the solitary hunters that some people think they are.)

this call sounds kind of like a bird chirping, but that's because that particular sound would not scare the prey off as much as a big old "hey, come help me get this thing" meow would. cats will do it at birds, mice, squirrels, laser pointers, strange cats in the yard, whatever they feel they need help taking. some cats do it, some don't...those with a particularly strong prey drive are more likely to do it.

Your cat is after birds! I have one that does it all the time since warm weather hit -- the birds tease her I think. I have never let her out to chase birds though, but it is instinctive. I can't put any knick knacks in that window any more -- she gets excited looking at the birds and pushes them out of the window.

You MIGHT be wise, depending on how good your screens are, to close that window during the day. She can still look, but even if she finds a really annoying bird, she won't be able to rip or knock out the screen.

I have two cats now and until a few years ago had 4 (had to euthanize the sick older ones) and they all had a special sound they made when they saw birds or squirrels in the tree. Sort of a maaa--aaaa--aaah in a low voice.

That's how they tell other cats and humans they trust that there are birds in the trees!

Now you are becoming a cat-whisperer, understanding their special language. Cats have many many different vocalizations. Most people never notice them!

Is your cat spayed? It sounds very much as though she is in heat and looking out the window would probably be because she is trying to call for, and find, male cates. If this is the case, I would really suggest that you get her spayed if she is not too old or obese. Not only will that prevent the accidental addition to the already overpopulation of cats, but it will also be better on her to not go through that, and on you so you don't have to hear her all the time, because the sounds will get worse, more frequent and very annoying.

If she is not spayed it may be because she is in heat. But in this case it's probably her instinct to go out and catch those birds.

I've had cats that make these noises when they see birds or other potential prey. There jaws sometimes will also shake.

Theyre attempting to immitate the noises the animals make through fact they might get the prey to return closer to the call of their very own sort. The closer they get,the extra the cat thinks approximately searching and taking those birds down.

I have 5 cats, and only 2 of them do that...but usually I will see either the bird or the squirrel they are 'talking' to.

both my cats do this weither they see birds or insects, like a chittering noice really unusal and their jaws move fast. They are just imitating the birds. don't worry she's not in heat ;) if she was she would be rolling on the floor rubbing against things and usually crouching down low and making loud miawo's now and again.

Cats that see birds do this. I think they are trying to immitate them to lure them as prey. Some sound remarkably like twittering birds.

My cat does this when she sees birds. Most cats make weird noises when they see birds.
