Does my cat want a companion?

I have a 2 year old cat named Carly, we adopted her a year ago. She is the queen of the house and always wants attention but does not really want to be held, and she is very talkative. My boyfriend and I work 40 hours a week and I am wondering if she is getting lonely. One day my boyfriend left for work and she started crying, she sounded like she was dying, until she saw me then she stopped. I am wondering if she is lonely and if we should get her a companion. I know that if we do we should get a kitten, but I am afraid of how she will react to a new cat since she is an only kitty with the run of the house. Will she be resentful? If we should get her a companion should we get a boy or a girl? I will definitely adopt if we do get another cat. Thank you for your input!

Update:

Ka_beccoh8 Thank you, I did research a little but I did not see your question! That is very helpful. She has been to my parents house with cats and dogs and doesn't seem to like them much, but I am hoping that after a while they would get along. Any thoughts? I know she is territorial, so it would take some time. I just don't want her to start hiding and change her personality. I start to feel that I would be being selfish by bringing in another animal.

Cats can be pretty territorial. She may not like the new comer at first. There will be hissing and challenging each other. They do get over this when they realize the other one is not going to go anywhere. You have to be able to supervise the introduction and adjustment times though. Don't just turn a kitten loose with her.

I've heard of some cats being agressive towards kittens, but normally they will accept one, even if they have been an only cat. It may take a few days for her to get comfortable with it though. Even if she seems somewhat agressive at first, she may get to be friends with it in time. The best thing would be to keep the kitten separated from her (like in a separate room) when they are unsupervised, until you are sure that they are getting along. Kittens like to cuddle, so it should be obvious when they have started making friends. Putting the kitten's food / water in a separate area from hers could help reduce any tension. From my experiences as a cat owner, I beleive that most cats are happiest in groups. Whether it's a boy or a girl won't make any difference, as long as they are both fixed.

It doesn't matter if it is a boy or a girl. Animals can get as lonely as people do. I would suggest if you get another cat, get one a bit younger than the one you already have. She may not appreciate a kitten either. Try to find one thats around a year or so. Even if they don't get along right away,, they will in time.

ADD: I liked the idea that one of the people that answered my question had, that you should try fostering a cat first. That way if you start to feel that your cat isn't getting along with the cat or getting enough attention or whatever then you don't have to keep it =)
