Does it matter if the tires are cold or hot when taking tire pressure reading?

I know the tire manufacturers say that it is recommended that you take the tire's pressure when it is cold. I however my nearest gas station is about 3 mins from home. Is that still considered "cold" by their standards?

Yeah it is recommended to check tire pressure when cold, but 3 minutes of driving isn't going to make a difference. When the tire manufacturers say "cold", they mean hasn't been driven, like it's sat overnight. When they say "hot", their referring to say, freeway or highway driving for long periods of time. Hope this answer helps.

  • the distance is not what i would be concerned about at this point, but rather the road temperature. if it is hot the tires will warm up more. an d3 minutes does not tell me much, 3 minutes at 10 miles an hour or 10 minutes at 65 miles an hour. but just use your best judgment, set the tires to bout 3 psi above what the sticker calls for and you should be OK. it would not be a bad idea to purchase a tire pressure gauge, they are cheap.

After only three minutes driving, your tires will still be cold enough for the "cold" air pressure settings to be used.

Yes, take the readings cold. Three minutes away should not be enough to significantly raise the temperature.

you can buy a pressure gauge for about $2 at Walmart or any auto parts store, that way you can check it at home. but a 3 min ride won't affect it all that much

thats good enough, just make sure all your tires have the same pressure in them.

if you take it hot just add 3-4 pounds from what it would be cold.

    Close enough.
