Repercussions of the Hossa signing?

I dont know that there will be any fallout from signing him for only 1 season. Zetterberg will get his money either way and because they have been so good at cap management they keep in mind which contracts come off the books and when. I think this was more a move by both sides saying show me what I want to see and maybe something longterm can get done (remember Lidstrom comes off the books right when some guys are in line for new deals and at 38 years old now he must be thinking of going out on top in the next year or 2). If Hossa is a lockerroom fit and he contributes to a Cup season he likely gets a 4 or 5 year deal and the Wings very wisely will be able to work out a "hometown" discount. It isnt the first time they worked a deal like this. Hossa proved to the world he was not a contract chaser but rather a guy committed to wanting a chance to hoist the Cup....the Wings are in the fortunate position of being able to offer just that. He turned down a couple of monster deals so he deserves a ton of credit for putting winning ahead of cash! And that is exactly what the Wings are about (and Holland does deserve some credit for not assuming anything and pursuing what didnt seem possible).

One thing you have to remember is a 1-year deal for $7.45 million is WAAYYY different than a 4-8 year deal worth $7 million average, give or take a million. The long term deal is way more lucrative because its pretty much guaranteed bank. If Hossa has a career ending injury this year he is screwed, or if he has a bad stat year his value will drop a little. I am very surprised to see Hossa go after this deal, (I thought it would have fit Sundin better, but he was too slow). I think Hossa's main reason was because he knows the Wings organization is full of winners. They have GREAT management, owners, and coaches. Something I just don't think the Pens really had, especially the great coaching part. The Wings had a LOT of money to spend to reach the cap and this is EXACTLY what they wanted. It won't be a problem signing Filppula unless Kevin Lowe offers him like $5 million a season. Either way the only party involved that has a chance to be screwed over by the deal is Marian Hossa, which is perfectly fine in my opinion.

Hossa will fill a needed role as a scoring WINGER, and even if he has the worst year of his career... it won't hurt the Wings. These are issues you get when you sign a big name free agent goalie. A person like Hossa can be a huge difference maker, but he really is not much of a liability because of the depth of the Wings. That is good news for the Wings.

I'm also quite sure the only thing left to do in working the Zetterberg contract is dotting the I's and crossing the S's ($$$). He's one guy that won't get away.

As far as the defenseman go... The top four are great, Lebda is a good 5th guy and I really would like to see Ericsson and Meech competing for that 6th spot. Lilja is a decent veteran, but I think they got him for insurance. Not only in case they couldn't sign Stuart but in case of injuries. I agree with NIPS, they should trade Lilja for prospects, don't see it happening though. Quincey is also a guy they should probably look into trading. I was impressed with him in the 2007 playoffs only because he didn't play stupid and take chances, which is what every rookie should do. But he really didn't impress me this year when he got the chance. Ericsson and Meech did.

The Wings should start their own Red Wings B team to play in the NHL. They probably would finish better than quite a few current NHL teams.

There's always an outside chance of this signing of Hossa having an adverse effect on signing other players.

Filppula being a RFA is limited in his ability to negotiate (truth be told he's not worth anything over $2 million @ this point in his career). He's not looked @ as an elite player just yet (probably won't ever reach that level of status), & if another GM wishes to poach Filppula - then Holland may as well take the draft picks in return.

Zetterberg on the other hand is an elite player, & will get his due (to the tune of $7 million, or more per season). I'm certain Red Wings GM Ken Holland will work something out with "Hank" sometime between now, & Christmas. It'll most likely be for 4 to 6 years, & I get the impression Hank is the kinda guy whom won't be upset if "Player X" makes a few hundred thousand $$$ more than him (unlike most of us Americans most Swedes aren't too materialistic/greedy).

Johan "The Mule" Franzen is also an integral part of the Wings (boy did he ever impress me with his gritty play these playoffs). Hard to gauge what he's worth since he was on fire from the 2nd half of the season, & throughout the playoffs; this year will give Holland a better idea of what Franzen will be able to command (on the UFA market), & hopefully a deal is done sooner than later (though priority is with Hank 1st - Mule 2nd).

As for Hossa - hard to say if he'll want to stay for another season, & hard to say what the cap will be for the 2009/2010 season (though as with the past few years it'll continue to go up). There's the outside chance of him staying in Detroit for a few more years if the cap goes up considerably; dunno once again if that'll happen.

He is good player. One of the repercussions is that he signed a one year deal. That puts the Wings in the same situation that the Pens were in last season with him win or he is gone. He is a hired gun and the Red Wings are more like a team. Not like the Rangers. (a bunch of high priced guys just doing there thing)

As for Zetterberg there is no way Hossa should make as much. Hossa missed shot after shot in the finals. (maybe I'm just an angry Pens fan???)

You have to believe that if Filppula gets an overpriced contract offer he is gone. So be it... truth be told in the WINGS system he is replaceable any offseason. He is a EURO style player that fits the system, there are 100s like him available that they could replace him with if needed.

Quincey will be another thats not needed now. Why carry him for 700k when he is the 9th Dman? Makes no sense, I am betting that his rights are dealt for a few prospects.

Either one of those guys arent a big loss. NOW, Holland does have to match anything Ericsson is offered. He has no choice. On ant other team, he is a 4th Dman already. But they have the money to do that if need be. Same with Howard. Even if Howard isnt the future they need 3 decent goalies in case someone goes down.

That said... I think that Cheli and McCarty will not get their contract offers until Ericsson and Howard and maybe FLIP have signed to guard against a GM taking a shot at them.

Another option the Wings have is to trade LILJA for 2 prospects and Sign Quincey and Cheli for the same thing he makes. 2 for 1 type deal. That may happen in all reality. I think Holland signed Lilja cause he felt he had lost Stuart. Trading Lebda makes no sense, as he is cheap anyway and clears no cap space. I trust Holland to make sure he keeps Ericsson and Howard, which in my opinion are MUSTS for the future.. other than that... we dont really need anyone else that hasnt signed yet... including CHELI!

The repercussion of the Hossa signing is very minimal. The only thing that could be the problem with the Wings are having too many stars on one team, which can hurt. The Wings will just be screwed at the end of next season when they have a lot to sign, with very little money to throw around.

Hossa is a good addition for just one year. I don't think this signing is going to change Zetterberg, he'll want a lot of money but it won't be ridiculous. As for lines, I see Hossa playing with Datsyuk and Zetterberg playing with Franzen.

The rumours out there say that Holland had two contract offers prepared the first in gets the money. Hossa took it Mats is still waiting. He will still be waiting for another month. Then he will decide.

He doesn't need the money. Google El Senador. He is one of the primary owners.

The biggest repercussion of the Hossa signing is another parade for Detroit in June.
