Transitioning out of government job to private: How did you do it?

I currently work in city government and have advanced to the top. I moved up so fast that I only have 2 years of procurement and 1 year of financial analysis, now I'm executive director. I'm not happy wit hthe money I make and I need to get another job. I have BA in Econ, MS in Tech Mgmt - IT, and an MBA. I've been all over the job boards and talked to people in my network and nothing has come up in over 3 months.... What else can/should I do??

Talk to some of the consulting agencies in your area. Many former government employees go this route. You may have to travel, but you will get experience. You will realize the pace is 10 times what you are used to. They will focus on the skill set you have...especially technology. I was with IBM for 17 years...then to IBM consulting....working with commercial, then government (state, city, local), then only Federal Government. I then resigned from IBM, became a Fed...so have been in both worlds. The jumping from consulting to government is common back and forth. Consultancies value the knowledge one holds of government operations. That is something that a college degree doesn't teach. Try one of the big 8 consulting groups, or even a regional one...Good luck!
