Why did John McCain throw long-time friend and adviser Phil Gramm under the bus?

I am sure it was not easy for McCain to have to distance himself from Gramm, but Gramm did say somethings that are not inline with the McCain platform and will hurt his campaign. If it was me, I would have said, "That is not the Phil Gramm I know" (like Obama said about his minister :-)

Because this election cycle has devolved into a never ending game of trying to fake outrage at what surrogates say and ignoring the issues.
Began with the Rev and it's been a vicious back and forth ever since.
Last week Obama rejected Clark, this week McCain Gramm, next week it will be Obama's term to sooth some faux outrage.
Source(s): And would someone run this damned bus cliche off a cliff already. It jumped the shark about 6 months ago. - therealmadeaLv 61 decade ago
He didn't - did you hear his supposed "disagreement" statement. It was pathetic. McBush has no real issue with what Gramm said - the ONLY reason McBush made a comment was because of the fact that it was all over the news. Gramm was and STILL is his TOP ECONOMICAL ADVISER - and good friend of 25 years! I don't hear any McBush supporters calling for him to "cut Gramm loose" like McBush wanted Obama to do for Clarke!!

Phil wanted to meet Obama's typically "white" grandmother, his most reverend Wright, his most Christian "former" spiritual mentor community, and his housing financier Mr. "I am not a crook" Rezko.
There are so many people under the Obama bus that McCain thought he better send in an operative, to better understand his opponent.
Makes sense to me.

I think it's the other way around! Gramm had no basis for what he said.

He's so busy trying to be the non-offensive, non-argumentative candidate that he cannot allow anyone in his campaign to have a firm opinion about anything.

Just Publicly, not socially of support wise...don't worry, they are still friends, sad as that is.
