If an atheist says "can you prove god exists?" and you reply with "can you prove he doesn't?" have you ever...

considered that it is YOU who NEEDS to convince the rest of the world that your god exists?

Aside from the fact that we can't disprove things for which there is no evidence, the atheists simply aren't concerned with disproving gods - or leprechauns or fairies or any of the other infinite, outrageous hypotheticals in the universe. A person could spend their entire life trying to disprove the existence of Whoville or Valhalla, and where will it get them? There is nothing in it for the atheist who disproves an absurd claim other than the satisfaction of seeing that logic works. Of course, if the claim causes harm, then this debunking has merit, BUT, for the believer who's religion relies on people buying into their claim, EVERYTHING rides on your ability to prove what you say is true.

So the point is, responding with, "can you prove he doesn't" doesn't help your cause, or defend you in any way. It's tantamount to calling a person a name because they called you a name.

ahh but you don't get it. You "seem" intellegent but are down right ignorent. For the fact that the belief in god is not based on seeing or "proof" BUT based on the bible. If there WAS legit proof then EVERYONE would HAVE to believe and everyone would go to heaven. Thats why its called FAITH. Thats how he knows you are worthy to go.

So for the fact that you say its more improtant to have "us" believers PROVE to the rest of the world that he DOES exist than for the "non" believer is pretty hypocritical seeing how its going to be just as hard and pointless.

All we can do is spread the word the god does love you and that you should beleive. But it all boils down to you. Do you or do you not believe? Again, thats why they call it "faith".

Theres your answer not that it really was a question anyway.

Not to mention the smartest man ever albert einstein tried to disprove a god with science and he couldn't. he stated that he believed in a god ( didnt specify a particular one ) but said all this could not be possible without some out side source. he is only human tho.

How do you expect empirical proof of an all-powerful being, I mean what technology do we have to search for something that powerful, its like trying to search for a body with a metal detector, before you can say something does not exist you need to have the right tools to look for it and only then can you make a clear discernment, that something doesn't exist. Unicorns and Leprechauns were never claimed to be invisible, or living in another dimension, therefore since they are terrestrial we have a fair amount of technology to search for visible and terrestrial creatures, and since no real evidence has been found to support their existence, we can make the assumption that they probably do not exist, however, since the Judeo-Christian God has never been described this way he can not be lumped in the same category.

However, responding to the question in the manner you mentioned is quite bad, because the burden of proof falls with those making the claim (theists generally in this case).

There is no need to "convince the rest of the world" that my God exists. I can only present what I believe. In the end we will all find out who was correct. The terrible thing is that if an "atheist" is right, nobody loses but if the believers are right, the atheist loses and all others who do not believe. In a sense though, you are right. Responding in kind is sort of like saying, "so's you're old man."

You contradict yourself. You say you can't disprove something for which there is no evidence, then you say that "there is nothing in it for the atheist who disproves an absurd claim other than the satisfaction of seeing that logic works."

Can you disprove it or not? No, neither can a Christian "prove" their spirituality. That's like saying "prove your sexuality" or "prove your individuality", just because you take action (go to church, have sex, or do things independently) doesn't prove anything, just that you're able to take action.

Nobody has to prove any aspect of the personal to you, including spirituality.

    Have fun bashing Christians.

Um, the idea to focus on here is that if you truly are a follower of god, it's not your concern to PROVE anything to anyone. Here's my thing, you don't believe? Fine, I don't care. Don't believe. That is not the approach that I should take i guess, but i know that no one can prove such a thing, and so it's impossible. Besides, the whole point of believing in god is FAITH, not proof. If there was proof, then everyone would believe and follow god automatically. That defeats the point of life itself, which is, to find your way to god on your own terms. You want proof god is real? Find it for yourself...cause no matter if it's tomorrow, or on your death bed, you will find out the truth. That there IS a god.

Hey Dan, you CAN see all of those things, therefore they are real.

The point is no one know for sure. Christians believe in faith, Athiests in pure science.

Let's just agree to disagree and not push spiritual beliefs onto others.

Also, couldn't God have caused the big bang? Why is that such an issue?

I don't respond that way - but I don't try to prove that God exists either. I have no need to. I don't mind that some people refuse to believe that God exists - that's fine with me. Not really my business.

But how would I prove it? I can't - it's a personal experience. If you choose to believe that God doesn't exist because I can't prove that God does - that's your issue, not mine.

Have you considered that atheists are a minority in the world. Most of the world believes in the existance of god/gods.

But point taken, saying that "can you prove he doesn't" is childish.

  • 1 decade ago

I as an Atheist have never asked anyone to prove their god exists. I merely place situations before them in which the existence could be questioned. :)

lol-The other day someone responded to a question (they couldn't really answer) with 'If I believe in my religion, why can't you just leave me alone?'

I wasn't even sure if they were serious at first. After a while I wrote that if they want to add religious phrases to govt currency and pledges and dictate what is taught in public schools, they better start coming up with something concrete.

BTW, anyone who wants to be 'left alone' about their religion, I suggest you don't talk about it on a public forum!
