What to do about a depressed cat?
I had two brother cats for five years since they were born. One of them got sick and had to be put to sleep. I got a new kitten that I thought would keep him company. He seems very depressed and lays in the spot where his brother got sick. He acts different personality-wise. He just seems sad. He has gained a lot of weight, too. What to do?

Give him lots of attention and love..(T.L.C) he might be still getting over it.

I am sorry about your furry friend. I can imagine that was difficult for you.
This might be hard for you to believe, but more often than not, the human owner is the reason that the animal isn't "moving on" from the death of another animal in the house. It is not in an animal's nature to grieve over an extended period of time. They will move on when given the chance.
Are you still expressing a lot of grief for the cat that has passed? Your cat could be picking up on this.
Don't nurture his sad behavior by giving him affection when he acts that way. He might be realizing that whenever he behaves morosely, you come to his rescue with love and affection. What pet doesn't love attention from his owner!
Evoke his inner cat behaviors! If he is still playful, play often with him. Encourage him to stalk a toy mouse or roll around in cat nip. Let him practice natural cat behaviors so he can return to his natural self.
Have you been feeding him extra treats because he acts sad? This could account for his weight gain. It also sounds like he might be slightly less active than before.
Take on a positive outlook and help your cat to move on. I know you can. =)

You don't mention how long ago the brother cat died. If it's only been a few days, give it some more time. He's grieving over his lost companion. However, if it's been a couple of months or longer, I would take him to the vet to be checked out. There may be something else going on with him.

Since cats are territorial maybe he doesn't much care for the new kitten "invading" his patch although your intention was so caring and admirable.
If it were me I would get him checked out. If all is ok, see if a friend will have the kitten for a couple of days and see if he brightens up a bit while it is gone.
Best of luck to you and to him.

well i'm so sorry about his bro! but you might what to take him to the vet the doc will probaly perscribe a pill or something but also try and play with him get him active. like hold him in a posision where your holding the cats back then just grab his belly and sway him like laeft to right and if he atacks he's just playing then get string if that doesn't work and sway he'll try and catch it! then put oics of his bro on the walls and by where he sleeps it'll comfert him and tell him that he'll see him again. it comferts me when my mom says that about my gramp and my dog! but if it still doesn't work then really take him to the vet!

Aw, I'm sory to hear that.
Try playing with the cat more and let the cat have playtime with the kitten. Always keep him occupied.

He is grieving his brothers death, its normal, if it goes on to long talk to your vet about it.
